View Full Version : Hamilton Rookies Shield Round 2, 10 April 2011

This is round 2 of an exciting series (and now world famous (http://hamiltonchess.net/2011/03/02/female-grandmaster-wins-hamilton-rookies-shield/)) of one-day chess events for Rookies (rated under 1700 as at 1/1/2011) in 2011. See here (http://hamiltonchess.net/events/rookies-shield/)for details and the results from round 1.

We are attracting many juniors to these events, many that have not played in chess tournaments before. Do not be worried if you have not played in tournaments before - we make sure everyone understands what is required. The events are held between 11am and 4.30pm on five separate Sundays, about 6 weeks apart. All events will be held in our new Hamilton Chess Centre, located near to the Waikato museum and Hamilton CBD (with plenty of off street parking).

The daily entry fee is just $10 ($15 for non-member adults), for 7 games of (G15/0) chess on that day, that includes a lunch break. Each day is treated as a separate tournament, but there will be additional prizes for the overall cumulative score winners from all 5 events.

Cash Prizes will be given as a minimum for overall 1st and 2nd, the best adult, best unrated player, and the best U18, U16, U14, U12, U10 ans U8 players (players can only win one prize). The prize pool is 80% of entry fees after expenses - so more entries means more prizes!

Some buzz: the 10th April event is shaping to be the biggest and best yet! 5 adults and 15 juniors are already registered, and we will be using the larger upstairs space to play, with the usual downstairs room being used for fun/analysis chess between games.
Please register online (http://hamiltonchess.net/events/rookies-shield/register/)so we know you are coming. Cash payment is required on the day.

If anyone requires a soft copy of the flyer (attached), for school internal or other promotional purposes, please let me know.

I hope to see many new faces at the Hamilton Chess Centre this year!

Today we had our biggest and best event so far, with 30 entries! We used the large upstairs space for the games, and keep the usual club room downstairs for fun/analysis chess between the 'serious' stuff upstairs. Richard Dare and his Mum Lillian came in first and second. David Chen, Christopher Symon, Benjamin Symon, Alphaeus Ang and Zion Vaughters won the 1st in the U18, U14, U12, U10 and U8 age groups. Elyse Oliveira was the highest scoring girl. Full prize list, standing and cross table are here (http://hamiltonchess.net/events/rookies-shield/round-2-results/). Photos from the event will be added to the site when they become available.

Thanks to Keong Ang for assisting as arbiter. And thanks to having the 8 kids and a few playing adults from Hikuai school.
