The ACF March 2011 rating lists have been sent to the ACF Webmaster and the State Rating Officers.

As a number of people have been aware, for about the last 24 months the ACF Rating Officers have been testing various systemic changes to further improve predictive accuracy.
As is usual with any systemic change all rating periods from December 2000 thru to December 2010 have been rerun.
These new ratings will be in effect before the calculation and publication of the March 2011 ratings.
One effect of this change is that the average rating of players on the December 2010 list is increased by around 60 points.

For the March 2011 rating period there were 80 Tournaments rated (49 Classic, 31 Rapid) and 7619 games of which 4706 were in the ACF Classic rating system and 2913 were in the ACF Rapid rating system.

Thanks very much for that Bill.

1982 is my best rating yet. If I didn't have a bad Suncoast I might have been close to 2000 !

Looks like everyones a winner here, but congrats to Yi Liu going to 2120 .

I think he has really come on in the past 18 months, probably due to expert tutelege from Solo

Maybe I should get lessons too !

Hi Clive. Welcome to chesschat.

The best place to find your rating is

http://www.auschess.org.au/ratings/acfrate.htm

There is a short lapse between when the list is distributed and when the website it updated but normally no more than a day or so. (I note that the new ratings are there now)

If you are keen to know your rating as soon as possible, it's best to ask Bill to add you to his list of bulletin board "personalities" whose ratings he publishes here, normally within hours of the ratings being finalised.

Same here. Mine went up by 114 by my dubious arithmetic. Maybe there are other criteria that apply?

(BTW, has anyone else noticed Max Illingworth's new rapid rating? 2675, albeit with a '?'. Even so: sapristi nadgers!)

These new ratings will be in effect before the calculation and publication of the March 2011 ratings.
Hence your rating and his rating are not 114 & 115 above your recalculated December 2010 ratings.

For anyone interested, these are the top 50 active-list rapid ratings. If the same criteria were applied as the other "top" lists many of these players wouldn't qualify.

While I believe I'm better at rapids than normals (perhaps a consequence of substantial increments making it easier for bad time managers to survive in normals) I'm not really quite sure what I'm doing in this company! I also note SA is well represented on this list.

I think this is what the list would look like if it was a top list like the others. I have just taken the others out from your list. It does seem a bit biased toward SA, but there might be a lot more rated rapid here in SA. Just look at the SACA calendar. Very good rating by you Kevin

Having a quick look through the whole rapid list it seems to me based on players who normal rating I roughly know that SA looks high, NSW reasonably okay, ACT perhaps slightly low, although the very active seem better than general, and VIC low. Not enough players on the list from QLD or WA and not sure about TAS. I also noticed at the Aus Juniors most of the juniors had quite a bit lower rapid ratings than normal ratings but maybe that has changed with the rerun of the ratings.

Not enough players on the list from QLD or WA and not sure about TAS.Rapid tournament organisers up here in Qld do not want to rapid rate their events. I have been told by some of them that they run the events on a more social basis, so do not want to involve the 'pressure' of rated games.

But we all know how seriously most people take their rapid ratings anyways. As a personal note, I do wish all tournaments rapid rated their eligible events.

Yes, I agree the rapid ratings can be a bit of joke, not Bill's fault, there is just not enough data being put into the system to make it work well.

Woah, Woah, Woah. How did my rating jump over 200 points?!?!
I went to the 1500 section and couldn't find myself, and then i saw myself at 1703!!!
Thats amazing!
I havn't looked at a chessboard since mid-feburary, been having a break, but I should get back into it now I guess! Thats amazing!

Edit- i just had a look at the top imrpovers list, and it says my rating only went up 120. My December rating was 1499, so how does that work?

I posted it in the Toolbox-Detox thread but it seems it needs a wider audience.

There is some really silly tinfoil-hat stuff going on on the other forum about Arianne Caoili no longer being on top of the Top Females list.

The reason she is no longer there is that her rating has a blank after it because she has not played that many ACF rated games in recent years, since she has mainly played overseas.

Only players with !! or ! after their ratings are included in the top players lists and this has been the case for a long long time.

So no, the ACF has not exiled her to the Glicko-gulag for having a relatively minor if remarkably incoherent go at it, and no, she hasn't instantly transferred to another federation over a few displeased responses in a scrap on a blog. Not that the latter would affect her ACF rating anyway as there are several players listed who are FIDE-registered to other federations. Furthermore, I speak for all of the Bilderberg group except for Margaret (she's asleep in the corner) when I say that no moon landings were faked in the construction of the list, and Arianne's rating was not psychotronically pulsed into oblivion by Dozsa via seance.

Just go to http://www.auschess.org.au/ratings/mar11/mar11act.txt and you will see:

do I get an 80 point uplift or something?

Is there a "Decay" for players who don't play much chess now built into the rating system?

Just browsing through http://auschess.tornelo.com/groupings/states--2/groups/vic and it seems that players who are long-inactive have lost points and players who are active are going up..... did Bill rob points from history to give to the present day players?

I wish I knew more about the ACF Rating system....

Under normal conditions ratings remain static but the rating deviation (ie the uncertainty regarding a rating) increases. This leads to possibly greater rating adjustments (either up or down) when that player returns to the playing population commesurate with the period of inactivity and not exceeding the rating adjustment applied to players new to the rating list.

With the recalculation it is possible that some people may have gone down but I can't tell you without a bit of research whether any did or didn't.

As there is no law of conservation of rating points, they would be no reason to "rob" any group of players to "give" to another.

As a result of the recent rerun of all ratings back to Dec 2000 under the recent modifications to the system, the 70 point uplift for FIDE parity that was applied in March 2004 ceased to be necessary for FIDE parity and was removed.

The result is that some players who gained the free points in March 04 and haven't played since have lost about that many points. More active players gain more points from the changes made than they lose from the loss of the 70 point uplift. Players who have been only very lightly active might have gone down a little bit but not a lot.

There is no decay factor for not playing.

I think this is the first mention of this facet of the rerun I have read. What about the earlier 150 uplift? was that outside the scope of this rerun? How or why was this decision to remove the 70 points arrived at? would this not penalize players who were active at that time versus players who's data is based solely on rating lists since the 70 point uplift? Have there been any other changes during this particular rerun other than the use of altered algorithms and the removal of the previous 70 points?

I would appreciate a reply on this matter, from Bill or Kevin, or anyone else authorized to respond; by this I mean I am very much interested in this concrete instance, not hypotheses about how such adjustments work.

Thanking you for your reply in advance,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Yes because the 150 point uplift rectified issues created by the previous ELO system.

I don't know too many details re the uplift removal, but:

would this not penalize players who were active at that time versus players who's data is based solely on rating lists since the 70 point uplift?

No because the net effect is that neither of those groups needs or gets the 70 point uplift. It is now as if it never happened.

Not aware of any.

I think it is very good news that the 70 point FIDE parity was removed from the system, why should we be trying to measure the ACF system with that out of date joke of a rating system. Let FIDE get themselves a proper rating system and then lets worry about comparing the ACF system to it. I could not care less if the difference between the rating systems is 100s of points because FIDE system is clearly inferior to the ACF system thanks to all the work that Bill and others have put into improving the system. Well done Bill, great job.

Tornelo seems to be a bit of a distraction now that it has its foot in the door. To paraphrase a philosopher whose name escapes me, there was an eternity before Tornelo and there will be an eternity after it has gone.

It seems that chess in some part defines people by their rating, hence the importance of rating accuracy to the Tornelo business model. It will be interesting to see what contribution this system can make and what gets pushed aside in the process.

At what point does a player's rating become so 'unreliable' that there is no point keeping them on the master-file? Wouldn't it be better at some point to have them start again?

Scott, all the top Aus players that I've spoken to lately are aware what their Fide ratings are. Not all of them however remember/care what is their ACF rating :).

2) Outside Australia people do not care about ACF ratings

3) If the ACF system would be superior - rating adjustments would not be required
4) lets have a poll of 1800+ players how many of them care more about fide ratings...and how many care about the ACF ones

for the 2100+ players - 95% will not even be bothered about ACF
for the 1800+ - some players will be bothered..but very few
for all of the fide rated players (including 1400 etc.) - majority cares more about Fide than ACF

Let the ACF ratings be. I do not mind people publishing some king or rating for me (they can make it whatever they like) I can not care less anyway :)...neither do many others.

I don't think so. If and when they resume rated play their previous rating provides a better idea as to a probable rating strength then something arbitrary value. The reliability factor tells the system the rating is out of date and this is taken into account when making rating adjustments when that player resumes.

As an aside, given the unpopularity in some circles of player resuming after a long hiatus having large rating drops, I can't imagine a policy of dropping a player's rating entirely and starting again would receive a warm welcome.

The ACF has been beholden to Gletsos for 10 years .... before him there was a period with no ratings officer.Once again David is caught out spreading misinformation.

John Summerfield took over from Shaun Press as ACF Ratings Officer from early 1993. He remained ACF Ratiings Officer until the April 1996.
Graham Saint then took over as ACF Ratings Officer and is still in that position today.
I have been the joint ACF Ratings Officer along with Graham since 1999 (possibly 1998).

I think it's got very much to do with Clubs, Tournaments and Individuals.
Personally, only this year I 've spent thousands of $s in less than three months just to go and play in tournaments organised by Clubs and individuals I respect and I support.

I wouldn't miss Amir's Surfers tournaments because I simply adore the atmosphere he creates.
I wouldn't miss North's Aus Opens or Champs because of the organisation in the best venue one could ever imagine
I wouldn't miss SIO or whatever it's called because of the great atmosphere and ambience
I wouldn't miss MCC's tournaments because there isn't a respite and you have to fight hard from round to round.
I wouldn't miss BHCC's Friday nights as long as Gerrit is the director / arbiter!
I wouldn't miss Begonia because I love Ballarat and because the organisers are great people.
Now, that I have included Tassie in my chess travel plans I know I wouldn't miss getting and playing there at least once a year!
I will certainly miss Noble Park's tournaments untill I can make it on Saturdays again!
Do you think that I wouldn't go and play in those tournaments because of whichever rating system they would use?
Do you think that Begonia or Doeberl or whichever other tournament uses Tornelo or whichever other rating system will have more or less entries because of it? (that's of course before we know how successful / unsuccessful the implementation of this system will be)!
So IMH opinion is not the rating system used that divides the chess community. It's the rating system used as a means of division amongst groups of people or individuals who already dislike one another!
In my case, I have learnt to ignore such individuals or groups by simply not getting into trouble reading or listening to what they say! I just tell them off once, giving them a good piece of my mind and then let them squeak as much as they like! No way I would go out of my way explaining over and over again my point (s); they don't want to listen! they are ony here to vent their frustration(s)!
Talking about ratings of course, most of the people who whinge about them, wouldn't know or understand the statistical functions, formulae and implementations involved and couldn't use them to save their lives!

Feel free to start one. It won't prove a thing about which system works better since FIDE ratings have benefits that ACF ratings do not.

I doubt I'd lift a finger to get a FIDE rating personally.

3) If the ACF system would be superior - rating adjustments would not be required

Faulty logic there. It is because the ACF system is run by people who actually care about the predictive accuracy of their system that adjustments are made. The reason the FIDE system is less often adjusted has nothing to do with it being a good system and everything to do with FIDE not caring enough to fix it.

Hi Bill, once again thanks for your work on the ratings. I was wondering when the SP files would be released, and also whether you were aware that Tristan Boyd is now an FM? Just that it is not listed beside his name on the top players list; perhaps would be as well to edit it in there?

reference: http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=3203050

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Hi Bill/Kevin/Barry....could one of you who has the ability to do so please edit the list of players at the start of this thread to show Tristan Boyd's FM title?

I consider this important enough to ask again. Those players who through their time and effort have received titles deserve to have that effort recognized and acknowledged.

Thanks in advance

Take care and God Bless, Macavity
