View Full Version : Sicilian Defense-Dragon Variation

this system bases on the bishop on g7, which is on fianchetto. the moves for
this defense go like this. 1.e4 c5 2.Cf3 d6 3.D4 cxd4 4.Cxd4 Cf6 5.Cc3
g6.6.F4 Cc6 7. Cxc6 bxc6 8.e5 Cd7 9.exd6 exd6 10.Ae3 Ae7 11.Dd2 0-0 12.0-0-0
etc.. the dragon system always tries to make a plan on the queens side
defense, by pushing to C3 spot, and getting advantage there, before white
goes 0-0. as you can see, the bishop on g7 is pointing c3, and u can go
queen a5 in a future, and ur attacking e4 spot, in an indirect way. by
pinning the knight on c3 with ur queen.

Perhaps from now on we should encourage graphical representation...

1.dragon is old

you can't really exchange the g7 bishop for the c3 knight, for anything except white's dark square bishop in fact.

White doesn't play Nxc6 that fast.. it's usually Be3

White can give black problems without castling

The plan is explained very nicely. This gives a clear picture, unlike the opening books giving a dump of variations with just a +- symbols at the end. I do not understand the opening books. The standard reply from these authors is that we should not just memorize, but understand the theory. Noawadays take any book on openings, the variations just end with +- without any explanations. I do not know how to proceed and will be glad if anybody guides me

Hello Vijayendra and Welcome to Chess Kit forum.

What opening are you trying to learn, and what books are you using?

I suggest you try Chess Base opening training CD's. They contain very good explanations and excellent games that demonstrate the aim of the opening.

Yes, +- is winning for white, however what Vijayendra means is that the Opening books do not contain explanation of the opening, but rather just give the moves.

I usually try Guico, Ruy Lopez as white and Marshall, Dragon as Black. I have to struggle a bit to face 1.d4 . As advised I will try the Opening CDs. Problem solving ontactical themes I enjoy most. But to get such advantageous positions, we need to have upper hand in openings. I guess Kasparov gets advantage that way. :)

To face 1. d4 you can try Cambridge Springs opening. I will post more about Cambridge Springs soon.

I play french defense. I have one excellent game played by Morphy which I will also post.

The trouble with 1.d4 is the game transposes to umpteen different openings. Some times any change in the move order lands into openings which we are completely unaware of. Though Opeing Guidelines are the ones which we have to clutch on, most of the times I fall into the traps/ are unknown complex positions.

For eg If I prepare for Nimzo Indian, but if the opponent deviates 1.d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 or 2.g3 etc., then I waste a lot of time on how to face unknown situation. How about you?

I always though e4 was much more complicated. I play 1. d4, so playing against standard 1. d4 openings is not hard for me. I really found it hard to prepare for 1. e4, so I turned to the french. Alot of people are playing it these days.
