The Politiken Cup in Helsingor (or better known in the English-speaking world as Elsinore, site of the great Castle in Shakespeare's Hamlet) has started and Tomek, seeded 31st has won his first round game: see here (http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/default.aspx?la=en&aar=2010). Live games are available but only up to Bd 17 (here (http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/live/1/live.aspx)). Games for replay are here (http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/2010/partier_2010.aspx?aar=2010).

PS For Bent Larsen fans, note the two Peters rapid match (Svidler-Heine Nielsen) in honour of Larsen (see here (http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/2010/SvidlerHeineEn.aspx?la=en)). There is also a blitz match in which the first day will be devoted to mandatory Larsen openings, Should be interesting!

Gunnar Stray didn't, Rej lost unfortunately.
They seem to be updating results on the website as games finish which is quite good.

EDIT: http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/turnering/detaljer.aspx?tur_id=919&lod=31&la=dk&aar=2010 has what I think is Tomek's first round game and I guess will have more

Forgive my ignorance, but when did Rej fulfil the last of the IM title requirements and when (if he is an IM-elect) will his title be conferred?

Rej moved too 2/3 after winning the second game of what appears to be the only double round day if I have read the schedule right. It is not in english.

Forgive my ignorance, but when did Rej fulfil the last of the IM title requirements and when (if he is an IM-elect) will his title be conferred?I do not know when he got the three norms, but he needs to get his fide rating to above 2400 at some stage. Until he reaches 2400, he is still a FM.

Double IM norm in the 2009 Oceania Zonal in the Gold Coast .

Third IM norm at 2010 O2C Doeberl Cup!

Technically there is no such thing as a double norm (it is an informal term that is not in the rules), rather some norms in some conditions are counted as being worth more than the number of games player. Before the latest rules changes it was 20 games now I think it is 13 games.

Yesterday I went to the exhibition matches between Peter Svidler and Peter Heine Nielsen which is a special event of the Politiken Cup, commemorating the 75th birthday of Bent Larsen.
It was well worth seeing these great players in action. The atmosphere was relaxed and it was a fast time control but with the separate viewing area and the big display screen it felt more like a championship match!
After the three rapid play matches the players went over their games with a very entertaining commentary. Previously I've seen some of Svidler's commentaries in ICC and really like his style. Today he mentioned how he gave up playing the Kings Indian, however two of his games today were Kings Indians. He also mentioned how he was considering resigning after 12 moves in the first game! But in the end the game finished in a draw. Svidler then crushed Heine Nielsen in game two and also won the third game. There was an interesting moment in the third game. When Heine Nielsen played a move allowing a discovered check winning his queen, Svidler thought for 8 minutes before deciding to capture the queen. He wasn't sure whether capturing the queen was the best move however in the end he decided to do so because if he didn't play it people in the audience would think he failed to see a simple tactic!
There will be more days of exhibition matches. In a few days they will be playing blitz games which should be quite exciting.

Thanks for the interesting up-date Tomek! Pity about that stray bullet in Rd 2.

Best wishes for the rest of your European tour (roll on 2400) - except 'neutral wishes' in your up-coming match-up against Mike Steadman ;)

Tomek Rej has made it to 6/8 and now faces his second GM of the tournament, 2625 rated Mikheil Mchedlishvili. This game on board 7 should be shown live tonight at http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/live/1/live.aspx?aar=2010

Tomek lost his game against Mchedlishvili and will now play 2128 rated Christian Altenburg Eriksson in a game that should be broadcast tonight. Tomek has not played a player rated between 2164 and 2542 despite his 2334 rating. This is partly because although there is 21 GMs in the tournament there is only 4 IMs.

... and mainly because theres 291 players in the event and he's either winning or losing (but not drawing) which exacerbates the yo-yo effect
