Thanks Jean for your wishes - I have not yet visited the Hamilton chess club, but it and a few ideas are on my list for promoting chess in the area.. and yes, that is not a big surprise for me:) .

Scot

Got a place for me to stay if I travel up?

Ha Ha Mark - the Humphreys Hotel furniture is still on the water in a container, and we are living in a small unit for 4 weeks, so it is a little tricky just now - but we will be taking in temporary borders from Sept I am sure - just need to negotiate with her indoors on that (she has family spread all over NZ but with her parents in Hamz then we will be the location of choice for family short stayers).

You may need to speak to others that are a little more established than me re accommodation options. We (ie the HCC) would be glad to have as many inter-region guests as possible, of course.

cheers, Scott

Just a small correction - before I had published this:

A half-point bye may be taken in any of the first five rounds, if claimed at the time of entry.

whereas what is correct is this:

A half-point bye may be taken in either round 1 or 4, if claimed at the time of entry. These are the Friday and Saturday night rounds - the most popular rounds for byes.

The HCC site (www.hamiltonchess.weebly.com) has been updated to reflect this change, and all prospective or definite entrants are requested to register via this site (go to the Register tab)

Some 24 players have entered the Waikato Open 2010, with 14 entries for the under 1700. In the Open, the only surprise in round 1 was a loss to Vivian Smith at the hands of Andrea Rivas. Round 2 saw another good result for Hilton Bennett in a win over Bob Smith. Round 2 also saw Richard Dare, in his first weekend tournament, get a good draw against Brett Rider. Normal transmission resumed with results in round 3 going mostly with rating, but draws to Vivian Smith and Philip Mukkattu should improve their ratings. Philip also turned the tables on William Lynn in round 4 .Round 5 is in progress, and the results on the top boards could decide the winners, with Ben Hague vs Paul Garbett and Hilton Bennett vs Danial Han (Note, bold names are Hamiltonians).

For the Under 1700 event, 14 players, mostly locals, have entered. There have been many hard fought games, but after 4 rounds, only Michael Budd is undefeated and so his round 5 game against Gary Judkins will be crucial for him. Nigel Crombie started well with 2 wins against higher rated opponents.

Why has Tony left out Daniel Han? Viv Smith, also, is an important member of the team.

Why has Tony left out Daniel Han? Viv Smith, also, is an important member of the team.

Oops, I forgot about Daniel! His perf was OK too.

But my understanding is that Viv will be a non-playing captain. (If she does play though, I'm sure she'll put her vast international experience to good use).
