3) Congratulations to Karl Zelesco! Is 594 an Australian record for rating points increase in one period?

I'd be interested to know. Of course, there are cases where ratings increase even more sharply but the player does not meet the criteria for listing in the Top Improvers list, and if you try comparing Zelesco's feat with pre-Bill-and-Graham Top Improvers lists there may not be uniformity of standards.

I've checked Bill's ratings threads back to Dec 03 and can't find anything over 500 in that time, unless I missed one.

Whether it is a record or not, what is remarkable is that Karl has topped the improver list two lists in a row and his previous increase was also much larger than the normal top figure.

Actually, future GM-Karl's old rating was 1001, so it is really a 603 increase - but hey it is just numbers! Not bad for a 10/12 yold!

As they say, if you want to beat a GM, do it while they are under 18 ;-)

Correct observation Vlad! If my memory serves me well I think during one rating period their rating was exactly the same!
Either way I think that the long awaited match must take place sooner or later.
I don't know if they have ever faced eachother OTB, but judging from their Forum exchanges it's expected to be a rather interesting if not - no puns intended - fiery affair.

We have never played each other OTB. The only time we were in the same tournament was the Aus Champs 2001-2 when I was a tailender in the Champs and he was one of the top contenders in the Reserves.

He did propose terms for a match some time back but they involved a rather large stake and would really not be in my interests because of the travelling costs quite aside from my prospects. Indeed the main function of the match offer seemed to be as a pretext to endlessly abuse me on a forum where he wouldn't be modded for doing so. I've indicated I'd be interested in playing him in a quick match for the interests of both forums and for a small stake if we ever happened to be in the same place at the same time.

Well there is something going on down here because pretty much all the strong adults over 20 have lost points (and see the figures on the Tasmanian top ten thread). The Tas Champs 2010 is particularly interesting. Several of the strong adults had shockers and lost piles of points, in some cases because their ratings were unreliable anyway (eg Markovitz and Small lost 100+) but Dyer who won the tournament outright gained only 19 points. It would be interesting to look at net points gains or losses for the whole field for particular Tassie tournaments. The high activity levels of the juniors cf. some of the adults could be an issue here; I'm sure that under ELO it would be worse. We may also be draining lots of points to interstate.

The high activity levels of the juniors cf. some of the adults could be an issue here;I think there could be two cases. The first one you have mentioned, that the juniors in question are playing a lot more compared to the adults. It does not mean that the adults can not play to their previous ratings, but that they are not active enough to keep to that previous rating standard.

Also combined with the above, it could just be that what was once considered a 1900 playing standard, is now 1800 as quite a few new players have entered the higher rating sections.

Probably the only way to show is for the adults to play a few tournaments in different states and see how they fare. If the adults perform interstate to their current rating, then it could be that all the juniors are under-rated. If the adults lose points interstate, then that would seem to suggest that the adults are over rated generally.

If the adults lose points interstate, then that would seem to suggest that the adults are over rated generally.

Assessing this in Tasmania is always difficult because there is so little interchange between our ratings pool and the mainland pools involving adults. And there are also home-ground issues to deal with when Tasmanians do play interstate or vice versa - do Tassie players who play badly on the mainland play badly because they are overrated, or because they just play worse away from home? Very difficult to test this sort of thing statistically.

My impression from the Aus Junior was that Tassie juniors are generally a bit less underrated than juniors from elsewhere, but not hugely so. However that's not a fair test either since the time limit was one many of the Tassie juniors had rarely or never played at before.

What is going on here is that those who are over 40 are generally losing points much faster than they should.

A big thankyou to the ratings officers for accepting the Phoenix event, even though it was posted at the last minute (sorry:oops: ), and in spite of it having games played via an internet connection between players in Malbourne and Tasmania.

A few more rating drops that this one and I only have to keep up not playing and I will be higher rated than both of you. :)

Hard to rule out more ratings points drops from me when Dowden (+5=6-0 against me) is rated not much more than 100 above me while Markovitz (+2=2-0 against me) is not rated much above me now at all!

An interesting statistic in the situation Dowden vs Bonham and Markowitz vs Bohmam where in both cases No. of wins nearly = No. of draws.

Ask your State Ratings Officer.

My score is .5. A game which was forfeit to me has been rated as a win, and so my rating change has been miscalculated.

So far your State Rating Officer has not reported any error.

I assume you are referring to youtr last round opponent.

BTW when you say it was a win on forfeit do you mean your opponent did not turn up.

He was forfeited when his phone went off.

While the game had commenced, my moves 1 .. d6 and 2 ... g6 hardly warrant it being scored a win.

Bill, what have I done to offend you?

Unplayed games are forfeits.

And while it may seem absurd that a game is rated when a phone goes off after just a small number of moves, I think there is actually a good case for it.

Firstly, past behaviour may predict future behaviour. A player who loses on mobile phone default (or on other conduct-type violations, such as being defaulted from a game for misbehaviour) may do so again. The possibility of this means that a potential to lose a game in that way is a part of that player's playing strength (or lack thereof).

Secondly, if you decide not to rate mobile phone losses, then a player who is losing a game might get a friend to ring them up so that they don't suffer ratings points loss from losing the game. Of course, a line could be drawn by saying that you will only rate the mobile phone loss if the player was losing anyway, but that draws ratings officers into assessing positions, assumes positions have been correctly recorded and transmitted to assess this and so on. Better to keep the rule simple: once the game is commenced, a loss is a loss is a loss is a loss and is rated.

I have heard that argument, it came up in discussion at the venue amongst other players. It obviously does not apply in this case, nor can I imagine lowly-rated players being so concerned as to attempt such a thing.

Whether the game should be rated for the losing player is one matter, the question of rating the winner's a completely different one. Just about anyone likely to play in a tournament can manage to start a game with two grandmasterly moves, and whatever it says about the loser's skills, it says absolutely nothing about the winner's.

What would be the rating of a new player who played the opponents I played and obtained a score of:
0.5 with the game against Leeson discarded?

1.5 with the game against Leeson counted?

The ACF follows FIDE.

The same arguments as I made re the loser apply re the winner. If you don't rate mobile phone games as a win for the opponent then you may end up ripping off a player who would have otherwise won the game and may have even been in a winning position when the violation occurred. If you draw a line and say you'll only rate some wins by mobile phone, where do you draw that line? A set number of moves? A set level of advantage? Some time ago an opponent played the Grob against me, and I didn't know it and had a dreadful position on move three. Ruling any line later than the current (one move by each player) is going to be hopelessly subjective and should not be the job of the ratings officer (indeed, if they do rule any line not formally defined in advance they will get accused of introducing subjectivity to the system.)

There is also the possibility, however faint, that winning games by mobile phone predicts that a player will do so in the future. For instance in some clubs enforcement of the rule is lax, and a player who gains wins by mobile phone might be doing so because he more persistently claims a win and kicks up a fuss when a violation occurs.

(By the way, in my view the best solution of all would be to get rid of automatic default for mobile phone ringing, but thats a Laws issue not a ratings one.)

Whatever the possibility, too small to bother over. Especially since the FIDE law is clear, there is no discretion.

For that matter, so is the possibility of someone deliberately being rung out, at least as far as ratings are concerned. A misconduct rule leading to sanctions up to a banning would be an effective way to handle such - if you're run out, you may be expelled from the tournament and/or prevented from entering the next like tournament.

It is, and when I run club chess again it probably won't be a cause of a loss at all. However, for state and national championships, where outcomes are more highly prized, a reminder before play and automatic loss is fine by me.

In this particular instance, the player concerned was late to play and should have been forfeited on that account as there was nothing advertised to the contrary. Since he was late, he'd not have heard the warning, but my view would be that's his problem.

Organizers should be ensuring that all competitive games are played under the FIDE Laws of Chess and not picking and choosing which parts of it they will and will not follow.
If they do not wish to follow the FIDE Laws of Chess they then they should not be organizers even at club level.

I agree that everybody should follow FIDE Laws of Chess without exception.

Also, I am in favour of action against mobile phones and any other disturbance that the arbiters consider is disruptive to players.
