Hi Brian Jones,

Thanks for the info. Also is there any backpackers there at all, meaning close to the venue? If so roughly how much a night? Also who is the best airline to travel with for cheap flights as well?

The DATMO organisers don't seem to realise that there are more players in their tournament who are GM / IM ! e.g. Justin's first opponent was a GM Das Neelotpal , but is down as untitled :wall: similarly, there is at least one other IM down as untitled.

Hello Kai,

Have you pointed this out to the organisers/arbiters?

Hi Garvin, how are you?

Yes, we sent a message to one of the organisers, but it is still unchanged. Maybe if you have that many GMs / IMs playing, the odd GM / IM missed out doesn't matter...

...but seriously, could it affect someone's norm chances etc if they don't pick this up in the tournament, or will it all be picked up by FIDE?

I thought he was titled and a couple of others as well. A few others seemed to have too high a rating for it to be highly unlikely they were not titled as well.

It could if the arbiters look at the list of opponents for a player and decide the player has not played the right titled players even though they had performed at the right level. Hopefully it will be all cleared up by the end of the tournament.

It appears all the highly rated Chinese shown without title don't have a title. It only IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan, GM Das Neelotpal and FM Tomek Rej that are missing their titles from those over 2300.

I do not think the titled players are bothered about it...if they play good chess and they know they have a title, if organisers forget to put it next to their name...they can not care less :)

Today I drew with another elderly gent - this time GM Dmitry Kayumov (2460) from Uzbekistan.I notice he became a GM rather late in life in Jan 2003 at age 53 after getting his rating to 2505 on the January 2003 list by gaining 45 rating points from 58 games via 4 tournaments in Alushta.

Forget IM titles. I'm shooting for the GM title in the World Seniors event later this year! ;)Go Brian! You have a good record in Seniors events. Hope that continues, not only in KL!
BTW is KL the same as when I was there. I.e., every day about 4 PM there is torrential rain for 15 minutes, and half an hour later you can't even tell that it has been raining? (that was October.)
Sadly, the seniors results don't appear on the chess results site - so how are you doing? Near the lead?

An extremely strong performance from the 75 seed Guo Qi. Despite being rated only 2165 she has managed to undefeated and get to 5.5/7 without playing anyone rated below 2426, a performance of 2706. Her age is not given on the FIDE website, but she played in the 2007 World Youth Championships under 12 girls where she finished third. This means she can be no older than 15, might be 14 years old. This is an extrodinary performance, but she has shown strong signs in the past she is very strong, but has played very few FIDE rated. Included in them this year is wins over GM Zhao Zue and IM Elisabeth Paehtz.
I wonder if she scores a GM norm (she might already have it not checked) whether she would become the lowest rated ever to do so.

He has been joined on 5.5 by Gary Lane who has recovered from a slow start to win 4 in a row, the latest over GM Gerhard Schebler. Domagoj Dragicevic also had a good result drawing with IM Duong The Anh.

I understand it's more to do with the fact that Dato' Tan is retiring from the chess scene and is stopping the sponsorship after many years of private support, and there is no obvious replacement. I am sure Brian Jones can enlighten everyone on this, as he is very much in the know about it !

It is a great festival - in the 10 days there, I think Domagoj, Justin and James played 1 individual rapid, 1 team rapid (as the Koalas), 1 Open event, and 2 blitz events, against some very high level opponents.
