the caro kann is a widly used opening agains e4

the position is e4 c6 usally followed by d4 then d6
depending on wether or not you want the advanced variation you can move e6 (the advanced) or Nc3

isn't caro kann :

2)... d 5 (instead of d6)

and dependin on whether u want to play adv variation, u can play:

3) e5 (?? since the pawn's on e4)

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 de4 4.Ne4 Bf5 5.Ng3 Bg6 6.h4 h6 7.Nf3 Nbd7 8.h5 Bh7 9.Bd3 Bd3 10.Qd3 e6 11.Bf4 Qa5+ 12.Bd2 Qc7 13.O-O-O Bd6 14.Ne4 Ngf6 15.g3 with a lot of play left. There, better. I'll start making an opening database for this site or something as I'm bored, or not. We'll see.

Any good players here?

Anyway ... Caro Kann ...

1.e4 d5 2.d4 d5 and here white can choose between a few main lines (or 3.f3!? which is a bit tricky especially after 3...e5!?)

3.Nc3, 3.exd5 or 3.e5.

With 3.Nc3 white protects e4, develops a piece, and can easily start developing. Black almost always plays 3...dxe4 as most other moves leave a weakness of some sort, or just lack of space. 4.Nxe4 Bf5 brings to the line I posted earlier, but if instead of Bf5 black also has 4...Nd7 or 4...Nf6 which are also good. (Theory goes way deeper but this is just a start...)

3.exd5 mostly leads to an IQP (Isolated Queen Pawn) position after 3...cxd5 4.c4 and the eventual ...dxc4 or cxd5 (because then white has a pawn on the d file without a pawn on the c or e, thus isolated on the queen file, ... IQP). Or white can choose not to play c4 and perhaps play Bd3 ideas and Nc3 or c3 or normal development moves without c4. =)

3.e5 c5 (happened a few times in Tal-Botvinnik world championships I think, worth looking up) or 3...Bf5. Aaaaand I'll type more later I am tired and don't like the caro kann =)

Oh 1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.h3 Bxf3 5.Qxf3 isn't too bad either =)
