There is a political party in Britain called the British National Party (BNP) that has been causing some concerns and discussions over in the Old Dart. They are a described as a far right and white only party. Foremost on their agenda is anti-immigration.

Early this year they managed to win 2 seats in the European Parliament (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8088381.stm). Then last week they hit the headlines again when a court ordered the party to amend their constitution (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6876255.ece) so that rules that ban non-whites from membership are removed and when the party's leader, Nick Griffin, appeared on the BBC's "Question Time" programme (http://www.smh.com.au/world/beyond-the-pale-bbc-faces-tough-questions-for-hosting-the-far-right-20091023-hdby.html).

Lucky for us, and thanks to Youtube, we can watch Nick Griffin's performance on that programe and we can judge for ourselves. Below are the relevant links, each segment being roughly 10 minutes.

Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iKfrY9l2kY)
Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNVB43xfBRY)
Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlQFvKgPSC0)
Part 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQE0QPFoLfs)
Part 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX2h1A6rk6Y)
Part 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slya8UVaQjk)

Anyway, I share all this here because, personally, I find the whole situation over there in the UK quite interesting. But also because I think some of the issues are relevant to at least a couple of threads currently under debate in this forum.

By the way, there were many who disagreed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8321157.stm) with the BBC's decision to allow Nick Griffin that level of public airing.

That's the problem when both major parties are elitists who love political correctness and surrendering sovereignty to Brussels Bureaucrats. Many Brits still want to have a say in how their own country is run. The BNP, like Hanson, attracts such people; and like them, has the wrong solution, but unlike her, is overtly white supremacist, so is a lot more dangerous.

Andrew Bolt has the right idea (http://blogs.news.com.au/heraldsun/andrewbolt/index.php/heraldsun/comments/bullies_cant_beat_the_bnc/):

If the BNP are as dumb and wicked as claimed, then open debates will eventually destroy it. Using violence (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8091605.stm), abuse, censorship and even the law to instead bully it into silence will only make more people determined to defend it ó if only to defend their own right to be heard. That was the lesson of Hansonism.

Matthew Engel complains that the gang-up was exactly not what was needed (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/d2d894d0-bf5e-11de-a696-00144feab49a.html?nclick_check=1). I agree, especially given what these polls say. Argument, not abuse, is the most effective antidote. Iím with Rod Liddle (http://www.spectator.co.uk/rodliddle/5441838/why-have-a-hissy-fit-over-the-bnp.thtml): donít panic or rage, just talk. Separate the legitimate concerns BNP supporters have from the BNPís ugly remedies, and address them seriously. Repudiate only whatís left.

These were the successful tactics John Howard used in neutering Hansonism.

Are you saying Hanson is not a white supremacist, or just not overtly one.

I doubt she is one, although One Nation probably had its fair share.
