View Full Version : Predictions for September 2009 ACF ratings

Dear 1800s rating band,

Goodbye. Trust me; it hasn't been a pleasure. In the words of the chief songwriter of my favourite band "if I never see you again, it will be way too soon."

Yours sincerely, Kevin.

I have three tournaments going in this period and performed at 1918, 2016 and 2113. Incidentally I tied for first in all of them.

Barry's calculator says 1913 for me once all three tournaments are in. Glicko-2 is sometimes more dynamic but I've got no idea if the gain will be more than that this time.

Dear 1800s rating band

be there in a few days. Please have beer in the fridge.

your dear (and often absent) friend

Dear 1800s rating band

Ditch Kevin, come to me! I would appreciate you a lot more! Sadly, however, I can only hope to remain somewhere in the 1000s due to my terrible peformance at JETS and lack of playing in other tournaments. Hopefully, it'll be + ... although I'm not entierly sure.

Anyway, hope to see you soon!
Miranda

I say 1520.

ps. miranda, i put your name and rating 1800 into a love calculator and you two only have 8% compatability, so you may never meet.

I checked this out today using the Glicko Calc. I suspect plus a couple to somewhere just shy of 1790. So I won't be able to crack that tinny just yet. :)

Dear 1800's rating band

Please stop running away from me! :) I am a nice guy and I am always kind to young children who have to stand on their chair to play chess against me, even if their rating is under 1000. Slow down and let me catch up a bit please. ;)

Maybe + 20 for this period after allowing for deflation.

I think I will enter the ratings list proper at about 1260.

Due to some distractions I only managed to play one tournament, the NSW Open, this quarter. In spite of not playing very well it appears that I will go up about 16 points to 1878 accoprding to the calculator, confirmed (close enough) by the back of envelope.

This is what Pat B and I are also estimating for your first rating.

I'll crack 1500 and hopefully it'll give me a good headstart on my attempts at 1600 by the end of the year. Only one tourney though, I might have to jump over to Melbourne for the Croydon one that's going on.

Miranda

According to people who 've played against you, myself not excluded, your playing strength is much higher than what your rating represents!
Maybe you did not play according to your abilities in a tournament (JETS in this case) but I am sure you will do better in the future!
After all you have other priorities too!
I am sure, however, that during 2010 you will do much better and that will be reflected in your ratings as well. So keep up the good work and try to enjoy your chess regardless of results!

λ

oh I forgot my prediction about my own rating: Still in the 1300s :) :wall:

By the way this is a great picture of Lawrence (here in a skeleton outfit) and Marcus (the blonde characters in the back row) :P!!! Usually it is Lawrence that smiles all the time and Marcus is the serious one, but not here! :)

Second row (right) smiling from ear to ear is Vincent Horton, another Tasmanian young friend of mine with whom I had a very fighting draw in Adelaide a couple of months ago! :)

The picture is published here courtesy of Burnie Chess Club Blog! A wonderful publication!

I'm intrigued as to what mine's doing - I had a HORRIBLE ANU Minor (will never play Minor again!). And a Belco tournament I got 3rd but lost to an 1000

But my JETS was great (so glad it was rated XD).

So mayyyyybe somewhere between 1250 and 1360? XD

As things are now, fg7 must concede for at least this coming rating period. I don't know about the future though since is as unpredictable as it can be, so in order to be sure to be sure, expand to 2100+ and you are as safe as houses!
However, rumour has it that you are not exactly happy with your rating even you if you go slightly over 2000 (which you have achieved at some stage I think)!
Rumour has it also that which according to your long term plab you want to reach at least FM title status!
Have you thought of combining chess with scientific research overseas?

All these rumours are completely incorrect except that I have briefly been over 2000 twice (max 2039). I have no long term plan and the only way I would get an FM title would be out of a Zonal cornflakes box.

Have you thought of combining chess with scientific research overseas?

Not really.

Not many games in the rated period so I am another who roughly stays put. Only NSW grade match games. Probably down a few points due to disappointing results in U1600 and marginally beter in U 1800 division.

Ok what has it done then?

+68 or so from JETS, but -38 from ANU u1600, and -10 from Murphy Memorial @ BCC

And let me guess, you're not going to tell me. ;) :P

1210? 1380? 1100?

This is the thread for people to predict their own ratings (and then laugh about how wrong they were afterwards). But if you have a list of your opponents and results you can use Barry's Glicko Calculator (http://www.bjcox.com/modules.php?name=Glicko_Calc) to get a rough idea. It's only a rough idea because it uses a slightly different system.

Oh; one reason I'll be a bit surprised if I go quite as high as the calculator says (whether or not Bill was anticipating the HICC result in his earlier comment) is that my results included two wins over Cameron Harris. Harris was inactive and has performed way below his old rating in this period so I expect him to lose loads of points and I won't be getting full value for wins against him.

Kevin, I have used Barrys calculator in the past and have noticed something, tournaments use K=22 but the calculator doesnt, in other words in could go way overboard on the amount of points I'd get, haha I woulda got 55 points from beatin Mos :P I guess I'll just wait until tuesday to find out my rating

What you are seeing is some people using a K=22 in Swiss Perfect to try and estimate the ACF rating change.

Kevin Bonham

ACF tournaments do not use any K factor and indeed in Glicko the K factor doesn't really exist because it is different for different players. It is quite possible to gain or lose 50 points (or thereabouts) from a single game if the result is dramatic enough and you have something other than !! after your rating.

Hmmm well thats interesting, it seems I've been misinformed, fair enough then, its a pity the tournament I beat him in won't be rated until december :( ;) I'll recaluclate my rating then, I'm still guessin it'll be still be around 1320 though :)

I'd be happy to be over 1500 in my first rating period in my comeback and hope to be 1550 - 1600 by the end of the year. I have to avoid the little kids - all booked up. Modest goals but competitive chess aint as easy as it used to be:( .

I didn't really think I had any games to be rated, but I was wrong. My 4/4 in interclub should gain me a few points, not many since two oppponents were unrated and I think will be still be unrated, and the other two are rated quite a way below me.
