Again I'm a bit slow off the mark with this one - the fifth of six rounds to decide two qualifiers to what is apparently now going to be an eight player series of Candidates' Matches (unless this has been changed again).

Playing this time are Akopian, Aronian, Alekseev, Bacrot, Gelfand, Leko, Kamsky, Kasmidzhanov, Cheparinov, Eljanov, Karjakin, Ivanchuk, Jakovanko and Inarkiev.

Karjakin just got married at the ripe old age of nineteen so may be a bit distracted at the moment.

Jakovenko defeated Kamsky in round 1 and Aronian defeated Alekseev. In round 2 Leko defeated Inarkiev with black and Cheparinov defeated Jakovenko.

This is a big one for Aronian, Jakovenko and Leko; a good result for Aronian here will see him qualify. Leko and Jakovenko are in a close battle with Radjabov, Wang Yue and Gashimov (Grischuk is also there but only if the others all flop in the last round). Leko needs second place to move ahead of those not playing in this event in the race for second; Jakovenko needs third.

The rest are most likely making up the numbers.

Who are you tipping to win this event so we know who will not win it ;)

I tip Aronian to win this one as well.

He has rewarded my faith with a big blunder against Kasimdzhanov and is very likely about to lose round 5.

After round 4:

+2 Aronian, Leko
+1 Ivanchuk, Cheparinov
= Eljanov, Gelfand, Kasimdzhanov, Bacrot, Akopian, Jakovenko
-1 Karjakin, Alekseev
-2 Inarkiev, Kamsky

Jakovenko needs to get his act together - was in danger of losing to Kasim in round 3 as well.

I completely forgot this was on last night. Rest day tomorrow.

Kasimdzhanov - Aronian

30...Qe7?? allowed a series of nasties that simplified the position into one with a very favourable material balance for white. But black was struggling anyway.

Leko had a very solid draw with black so Chepa-Chucky is for equal first if anyone can win it. Chucky one pawn up and for once his opponent is in worse time trouble than he is.

Four queens on the board in Gelfand - Akopian, but sadly, not for very long. :(

Black must chuck a piece and swap one pair of queens to avoid being mated by white's queen pair, so game over.

I fail to see why such a large tournament is being held in a tiny town - of only 4600 people (or so Wikipedia tells me ;) )

Currently, Ivanchuk, Leko, Aronian and Kasimdzhanov are leading on 4.0, and Inarkiev has fallen off the pace a bit - 14th place with only 1 point.

Kevin Bonham

After eight rounds:

+3 Ivanchuk, Leko
+2 Kasimdzhanov
+1 Aronian, Alekseev, Eljanov, Karjakin
= Gelfand, Bacrot
-1 Jakovenko
-2 Cheparinov, Kamsky, Akopian
-5 Inarkiev

Jakovenko's prospects for getting one of the two World Champs spots are looking very shaky now while Leko has thus far done his no harm at all.

Kasimdzhanov defeated Cheparinov in round 9 to move to a share of the lead and the rest were drawn.

Alekseev 1-0 Eljanov. They ought to have bonus points for this sort of effort against the Berlin.

Leko - Akopian. Swindled draw; Leko missed 48.Qd5 completely winning and doubtless plenty of other goodies.

Ivanchuk and Kasimdzhanov both salvaged draws so what was looking like a one-point lead for Leko ended up being nothing.

+3 Ivanchuk, Kasimdzhanov, Leko
+2 Aronian, Alekseev
+1 Karjakin, Gelfand
= Eljanov
-1 Bacrot
-2 Jakovenko, Akopian, Kamsky
-4 Cheparinov, Inarkiev

TWIC currently have Inarkiev incorrectly entered as drawing; he won.

Three rounds to go.

Eljanov (now +1) beats Cheparinov (now -5)
Inarkiev beats Jakovenko making both -3. What a shocker for Jakovenko who was in quite a competitive position for the 2 WC spots before this.

I tried to find a win for Bacrot in this ending vs Ivanchuk but I am not convinced there's one there:

Missed the games tonight (out at 20th school reunion) but Gelfand defeated Kasimdzhanov with black (unlucky for Kasim who was so close to victory) and Kamsky defeated the rather up-and-down Eljanov.

So +3 Ivanchuk and Leko and +2 Kasim, Gelfand, Aronian, Alekseev with Karjakin +1.

Final round

Gelfand - Leko
Eljanov - Kasimdzhanov
Karjakin - Kamsky
Bacrot - Cheparinov
Jakovenko - Alekseev
Akopian - Ivanchuk
Aronian - Inarkiev
