So Kevin, as it has turned out, it appears that I was the one to 'blink first' in both games. Of course, whether this blinking or not was profitable remains to be seen.

Whoops! Catastrophic clerical error; for some completely unknown reason I had entered in ...c6 not ...Nc6 as your 8th move and was wondering why I had such an excellent position already.

This sort of thing is an occupational hazard of being me. Can I get a computer to help me with reading as well as chess?

Maybe I should cut and paste the position each move in future!

0-1.

Ditto (re: the entering). For me, compounded by playing too many games at once, on more than one computer, not respecting the game at hand sufficiently. Result: Exactly what I deserved = fatolla zero.

Something I do is keep a computer database in fritz of each game. Then when a new move is made, I just update the database. Means each time all I have to do is a couple of clicks and the new position appears

Or you can use the pgn viewer to check the position.

Yes, this is what I have been doing, but it doesn't help if you enter a move wrongly and fail to notice you have done so! Using the viewer to check as Mangafranga suggests is probably best.

Lame excuse: the fatal misreading was made on a day on which I had worked twelve and a half hours.

Why this excuse is lame: anyone with any functioning brain cells would have gone directly to bed instead of trying to play chess games under such circumstances.

Actually this may have been not a copying error but simply a case of failing to promote the move actually played to the main line in my analysis before saving, and then forgetting I had not done so. My saved copy of the game has 8...Nc6 9.Qa4 Bd7 10.Qe4+ (etc) saved as a sideline with 8...c6 9.Qa4 as its main line.
