Haydn Barber wins WA Championship.... AGAIN!!

He has done it again. Haydn Barber has just won his 14th (or 15th if you include the 1986 event he won jointly with Jim Simpson) WA State Championship.

There is something about this event that has Haydn Barber pulling out his best results time and time again. This despite a disappointing result in the Huntingdale Masters.

this is an amazing achievement

Another achievement worthy of mentioning is Darryl Johansen winning Vic Championship 11 times or so

I believe Haydn now holds the outright Australian record for most wins of a state title - as I mentioned last time this was discussed Otto Weber won the Tasmanian Championships 13 times. Well done Haydn!

I lie awake at night wondering about the Compaq computer. I hope that it is safe and warm and happy. I worry about these things.

Its also worth noting that WA chess championships have been traditionally harder to win than Tasmanian ones

Absolutely - I'm not aiming to compare the quality of different state titles but simply to note it for the sake of Haydn's feat being likely to be the record.

Weber was a lot stronger than the average Tasmanian champion though. He was =2nd in one Australian Championship and =3rd in another and had wins over Ozols, Koshnitsky, at least one of the Purdys etc. He was at least 2300 strength - it's surprising that he only won 13 Tas titles from 16 attempts rather than winning the lot.

Kevin, does this mean Weber was Tasmania's strongest ever player? If not who would you suggest?

Definitely according to Neville Ledger's book, and he would know better than me. (Ian Rogers was born here but never lived here for any significant period.)

Kevin, how many times have you won the State Champs? I'd say go for the record, but you may decide you want to move out of Tassie eventually.

I have a mere two wins to my credit (2001-2), and am no threat at all to Mr Weber's record, especially not now that there is a considerably stronger player living here (Tony Dowden, rating in mid-high 2100s).

I do however, oddly enough, have the record for the most Tasmanian Open titles (four).

I have only recently began checking out this site so I missed the two threads regarding the WA Championship last year. I always believed that Otto Weber had won over 20 Tasmanian Championships so I never thought about breaking any records. It was a pleasant surprise to find otherwise! I know it is only WA Championships but it must be something.

As far as I am aware, Mike Woodhams is the youngest winner of the WA title being 19 when he won in 1967. I had a chance to beat it in 1968 when Mike and I were equal leaders going into the last round but I only drew with Dick Lilly. My chances of beating Mike in a playoff at that time would have been very small in any case.

I am, at this very moment, looking at CIA Sep '74. It has Dick Lilly on the cover holding a chess set. He is also wearing a suit. See, back in the day, chess players were very well presented - unlike today.
