    ACT Junior Championships

Today saw the start of the ACT Juniors. We tend to have separate age championships during the year and use the holidays for our big Junior Championships that everyone plays in. August will see our Under 8, under 10 etc.

Unfortunately our best juniors are either overseas or not interested in playing. Peter Jovanovic, Gareth Oliver and Michael Wei have won it already in previous years and Junta Ikeda and Chris Tran are overseas. Tor Lattimore seems to prefer coaching to playing these days. However it is good to have some of our best players and a large number of our future top players!

Today did see a number of upsets - probably too many to enumerate! However in one of the most dramatic Khoi Hoang lost his first two games - just blundering winning positions. Jeremy Neeman was lucky to escape with a win against Andrew Brown after going down the exchange.

    Day 2

My family seemed to be involved in the blunders today. Shannon turned a totally drawn end game into a loss against Jeremy Neeman and in time trouble blew a won game against Aidan Lloyd into a draw. Tamzin was up a piece against the talented Edward Xing, but managed to take a poisoned pawn and lost.

Sherab had his chance to take the lead when he was up multiple pawns against Jeremy Reading, but Jeremy played a fantastic end game to draw and retain outright first.

Khoi Hoang is climbing up the standings, with 3 wins today after his horror start yesterday.

The most notable thing about today was the cold. We have a wonderful chess centre, but it has no heating. Canberra kids are tough and we are used to playing in unheated schools, but the new hall has a very high ceiling and no insulation. It got very very cold last night and the hall was icy this morning. When I went around turning the digital clocks on, I wondered if they would actually work, they felt so icy.

By lunch time my hands were so cold, I could barely type in the results. We do have a couple of tiny electric heaters, and the kids tend to cluster round them to warm up a bit, before going back to their games. I don't think it could have got warmer than 8 degrees in the hall today! I am taking in ugg boots tomorrow and hot water bottles :)

if those four tables were put in code, i think it is, would it produce the nice neat easy to read cross tables?

Depends how you export the data from SP.

The best way I have found is when exporting the view as text is selecting {space} as the seperator in the drop down menu and ticking the formatted output box.

Then on here you put it all in a set of code tags.

when I have some free time (?) I'll experiment on how to do it. At the moment, between spending all day running a tournament and all night trying to catch up on housework, my business, and answer e-mails for the Aus Junior team, I am afraid all I am capable of is exporting from Swiss perfect and dumping it on here.

Dumping them inside of CODE tags does greatly improve readability. After all there is not much dumping them on here if no one is going to read them.

Anyway, I've refrmatted the last two messages. Please give CODE a go. It really doesn't take any more time.

    Thank-you

The problem is you have to be technologically competent. I really am when I try, but I normally have to take a deep breath before I do something new and feel very brave.

I was mopping floors at our chess centre until 7pm, then went to a 60th birthday party. I am now feeling very pleasantly awash with Indian food and champagne and am about to sit down and watch the Thomas Crown affair with Shannon, Gareth and Tony. Tamzin of course like all good 12 year olds has been asleep for many hours.

Tomorrow morning I shall take all the technical hints and try and create a final post on the results today, that is in an acceptable format.

Trust me, it doesn't require much bravery. What you posted in previous messages was 99% of the way there. All I did was wrap it in the CODE tags and fixed some column formatting. I used cut and pastes from Notepad to get the column alignment right and it took all of about 2 minutes.

OK - my blood pressure went through the roof at the mention of tags, but having edited your fixup of my post and saw what you did, it all seemed understandable.

I exported from Swiss perfect in HTML and then did a copy and paste, put the code thingies in and it all worked perfectly -didn't need to do any adjustments at all.

OK - now for a description of yesterday. First of all the weather report - cold and foggy with no sun. Hall was even colder than previous days. However by this stage we all had our coping mechanisms. Jeremy Reading turned up in 2 pairs of pants and 4 jumpers. Shannon took her boots off and put her feet on a hot water bottle. I found hugging a hot water bottle under a coat did a pretty good job. Unfortunatley I had to put it down when re-setting clocks and entering scores, and various juniors tended to steal it. The only person coping was Andrew Brown, who swanned thought the 3 days in shorts, apparently totally impervious to the temperatures.

Jeremy Reading dominated the tournament, only conceeding one draw to Sherab. Sherab was winning that game, but Jeremy toughed it out and turned it into a draw.

Jeremy is one of the nicest Juniors in Canberra (and we have a lot of nice kids), so really good to see him win the tournament. The ACTJCL opened up membership to under 20's this year and Jeremy is glad we did, as he is turning 19 this year and wouldn't have qualified without our rule change.

Sherab after 2 days of really good play, had a bad day yesterday. He went down an exchange to Tamzin and only superior end game play enabled him to hold it to a draw. He wasn't as fortunate against Andrew Brown, where he was totally out played. This gave Andrew Brown 3rd place overall and the Best boy under 12 perpetual. However Sherab's strong play in previous days was enough to give him 4th place on countback.

A visitor from NSW, Hung Nguyen, played some good chess and took the unrated trophy.

Shannon won the ACT Girls title (and 5th place overall). Fortunately Tamzin lost to Jeremy Neeman in the last round or else she would have ended up a 1/2 point ahead of Shannon and we would not have a very happy home at the moment. Tamzin had scored 1.5 out of their previous 2 encounters, but Jeremy really is a stronger player than her currently, and so he was able to get a pawn up on her and convert it to a win. This gave him outright second.

Emma Guo is playing exceptionally well at the moment - she is a tough girl and has a bright chess future ahead of her. She won the best Under 10 trophy as well as the best girl under 12 perpetual.

We have a trophy for the biggest upset and this went to Taiyang Zhang for his win against David Jaksa.

A further encouragement award went to Aidan Lloyd for his very solid play all 3 days.

It was quite pleasing to see 3 of the top 7 places going to our girls.

A big thank-you to Campbell High for providing our fabulous (albeit cold) venue, to Mirabelle Guo for running the canteen, to Aidan's Dad for welding together a broken chair and to all the parents for tidying up at the end.

Next month sees most of our age titles being decided. The under 8, under 10 and under 12 are all 15 mins per side, but the under 14 will see a return to rated games.
