Hold on Malcolm, what do you mean c'est la vie? Don't I deserve some explanation? What happened to Nicola? Do I arrange my business with your may be or maybe nots? Why is it me that has to get the bye? Fix this and let me know ASAP please! And by the way use this ultimatum style of dealing with people for your self, I don't need and I don't take crap like that from anyone!

    Hi Tasso,

I meant that I did not choose you for the bye, the Machine did. It chose you as the person on the lowest score with the lowest rating, who does not have a pairing shall be given a bye. And this bye is to be worth 1 point.

I also meant that I was sorry that you were missing out on a game. Nikola chose to have a half point bye in this round, not me. So the fact that it created an uneven amount of players is to me unfortunate also. I greatly prefer events with even numbers so that byes are largely avoided.

And as far as " this ultimatum style of dealing with people " and " I don't take crap like that from anyone " I wish I hadn't read those things. I don't think this is something that I feel particularly culpable of in this matter.

I will accept complete blame for the poor manner I chose to introduce this matter to you. I should have sent you an email, but I didn't and I don't believe in editing the past to make for a more holistically pleasing image, so I can only proffer my apology and you may take it as you see fit.

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

    Hi Malcolm,

Let me start this by admitting that my choice of words wasn't, to say the least, the most appropriate one, and in a manner that, of course, I am definitely not proud of and I wish I had never used those unfortunate expressions!

However, and according to my past experience with you in announcing draws and other information publicly, I have never ever observed the tone you used to address me in your original earlier this morning.

First of all, there was no reference at all that Nikola, who actually is a very close friend of mine, had asked for and was granted a bye. None at all!

Secondly, and of what came through your notification, the most logical interpretation on my behalf was that "look ELliott, Nicolas may turn up or may not. If yes, you will have a game if not so be it! (that was the "c'est la vie" part).

Just for the sake of arguement, reverse the situation and imagine myself addressing you through the Club Championship's thread of this Forum in the following manner:

"Malcolm, I am sorry about my not coming to play on Monday, then again it may be possible that I will come to play against Nikola, but otherwise c'est la vie"!

I am sure, you would have not approved of it!

Thirdly and most importantly, it was the overall manner that an official of the most important tournament of one of the most important Chess Clubs in Australia and member of its Committee, addressed a member of the Club.

Bearing in mind that we are trying to improve the image of the Club, and you know that much better than I do, and considering the fact that these lines are read by hundreds of viewers throughout Australia, believe me it creates the wrong impression even to the most goodwilling and objective observer.

An impression which of course was not improved by my own boorish, uncharacteristicly base and inexcusable reaction for which I sincerely apologise.

I will come to the Club on Monday evening anyway because I have some business to attend with our President, so I shall see you there!

Why are half-point byes allowed in the first place?

There will have to be a round 2 mark 3, as Doug emailed earlier to say he can't make it after all.
