What sort of deal? Does one player concede for a share of the prizemoney? (Apologies for my ignorance on what occurs in such tournaments).

184000 sounds impressive as long as they weren't Zimbabwean dollars

Perhaps the deal came about because James was being obstinate.

At a point during the final table the players can, provided they all agree stop the play and them divide the remaining prize money up different (more evenly) in a way they all agree to. Some money is resevered for the winner so that after the deal the players are stilling playing for something. This means that although $184000 (US dollars) was the advertised first prize it is not necessarily what James Obst won.

Three cashes is very impressive indeed, well done Kerry. I suspect James is still looking for his first big live score.

I think he has about 5 live cashes, with this last one being his biggest and highest placing as far as I know.

Off the top of my head - Obst got about 40k from his one cash - Stead cashes were much smaller probably about 15k in total. Obst also picked up 20k US for finishing in the money at a poker tournament in London last year, but he has won over 1.6 million US in online tournaments over the last 3 or so years. He was banned from major sites for some of that time because he was playing underage.

Kerry Stead running good in Vegas

I'm not a chess player but I thought that you guys might want to root for one of your own in Vegas ... you can follow Kerry Stead's progress here. He is doing very well for an Aussie.

FWIW - H.O.R.S.E is like the decthalon of poker. Go Kerry!

Nice one, knocking out Phil Hellmuth would be worth it in itself.

    Nice result against Hellmuth.

Out of interest, wasnt Oepty the guy who was against betting in chess ?

Or was that another Oepty ?

Same guy. The post is an old one so it seems he only developed those concerns later.

    Thanks.

BTW, was Oepty the "born again variety" of christian like "[himselfcuban] fan" ?

I kept getting "recent convert vibe" from him and his former interest in gambling may well support this theory as he does appear to be straddling two extremes.
