    From that thread.

My rating target, as always, is to be ahead of firegoat7.
Barely successful for the year this far but may be a failure for the final rating period as firegoat is 1886 and all I know at this stage is I am not going below 1880.

(Getting over 2000 again would be nice, but it's hard work and I've got 47 points to recover to get back up there again.)
Definitely an E grade for this one as I have gone further backwards by a substantial amount to below 1900 now.

This year has been a shocker for me in chess terms; I've had a few OK tournaments including one equal first in a strong event, but a couple of really bad ones and nothing particularly good.

Achieved my highest ACF ever (going down on december 1st though). As far as quality of my chess is concerned, playing same rubbish as ever. As for my coaching goals, i should say the year has been quite successful

I thought the coaching would be quite disheartening and humiliating considering some of your students

My goal for this year was to improve - can I give myself an F for completely failing this goal?

I believe my chess improved but is not reflected in the rating (losses are losses but by narrower margins).

Reason for this statement is that I am getting much closer to beating stronger opponents over quite a number of games and have lost just a few crashes to considerably lower rated players.

An example of the former is that in the BBC Champs, I finished 4/7. Of the three losses, all to stronger opponents,
    a) I was a piece up (and lost) as analysed on CC - a tough game
    b) I was a pawn up (and lost a better position) - as analysed on CC
    c) I was better, then dead drawn 0.00, then lost to an incomplete endgame knowledge.

All proper losses to be sure, but my point is that previously I wouldn't have been able to get near these blokes, whereas now I'm closing in. Their ratings don't seem to be dropping.

    OK dribble over. I get a D/E.

    2007 - 21 games. 2008 - 28 games.

Not a huge increase but still a goal attained.

    Grade: B

This is harder to assess. Of the 28 games this year there were 5 draws so this is substantially down from the 9 that one would expect from last year once the increased volume is accounted for.

Regarding the win percentage last year I ran at 78.57% This year it is 80.36% so a slight improvement. My rating should be slightly higher this year so the results are not thanks to playing a hugely weaker field as far as I can tell.

    Grade: B

    B

My aim this year was to play more chess after a few months off in the second half of 2007.

I've achieved that with participation in about 15 tournaments.

Wins in the Qld Open, Queens Birthday Rapid, Chesschat#7 and a couple of BCC events were supported by decent seconds in the Australia Day weekender and the Wendy Terry Memorial and solid performances in the Sydney International and the Queensland Championships.

This year I got close as I ever have to beating Solo, in the Day of Knights Rapid. Maybe this will happen next year !!

    Cheers
    Garrett.

Ha! I give myself an E on that one

    I will do this through:

Constant review of my games lost.
C i did this more this year than last.
Playing through Grandmaster games in the openings I want to play
Not as much as I would have liked. D
Preparing for my opponents in long tournament - not weekenders.
Yeah I did this in bits and piecxes. I remember preparing for Gunner Duggan at the last round of the Australian Minor..... but the preparation did not come through! I'll give myself a C
Relaxing in my games more. This year I had too many instances where I would put pressure on myself to win. So new attitude. Have fun.[/QUOTE]

It's a tie. A tie is not "ahead" so that's an E for that one as well.
