One of the best tips i ever heard is what they call the "secret to chess."
After your opponent makes a move before u do anything else have a look at what squares that move just left behind. It could be quite a significant hole in their position that you can exploit.The slower I play the better I play, who would of thought?

I remember watching Josh Waitzkin's lectures on Chess master, after every move he'd say, 'Now, what has he left behind'. I find myself saying that to my students a lot. I also get them to play tic-tac-toe without paper.
And still, no one has satisfactorily proven, that it isn't opposite day.
