    well I am still breathing. That pic is a few years old now. Maybe the same snake is now about 5" across, it swallowed a possum or bandicoot a few month ago and was so bloated it could not move much. I would not touch it now as could not grip well. Luckily no brown ones around my place, though some in the same national park just down the coast a bit. I took on a brown on outside the surf club one day to keep it out, I was ahead on points until an Aborigine lightning fast grabbed it around the neck.

    I have plenty of black ones and they are supposed to keep the browns away or even eat them.

    Heard a palm frond come down about an hour ago, a Bangalow so not a large frond. It brought down a small possum as well that hurried back up the tree seemingly unharmed. It should have been home in bed instead.

    Fallow deer. Granted Canberra is surrounded by bush but less than 10km from home having a near miss with one of these causes an increased heart rate (is that healthy?) At least it missed unlike the kangaroo which decided it liked my son's car.

    As for magpies, I was one of the wise individuals who cast a vote for Ian Rout and the Deadly Serious Party. A sound policy for dealing with magpies which the short-sighted ignored.

    Part of the issue with this news article is the conflation of magpie-larks with magpies. The principal pest warned of in the sign is the magpie-lark also known as the pee-wee in the Eastern states. I've never felt endangered by a magpie-lark although I can't say the same for the side mirror of my car which has come under threat from a magpie-lark arguing with the bird that lives inside the mirror.

    Magpies on the other hand are a totally different proposition.
