    2009 Sydney International Open (SIO)

The 2009 Sydney International Open (SIO) is confirmed for 14-19 April 2009 at Parramatta Town Hall. Once again we expect a very strong field!

The 2009 Sydney International Challengers (SIC) will again be offered for players rated U2000.

The SIO website is at www.chessaustralia.com.au (click on "Sydney International" at the top of the screen)

Will it be going by a different name in 2009?

I think we should applaud SIO organisers for releasing event details so early

    Questions for Brian Jones

    Hi Brian,

Is the schedule on that website fixed? There is a change in the schedule from the past 2 years, in that Rounds 1 and 2 are now on the same day.

I am planning to book the air tickets soon. Will the discounted rates from The Marriott Parramatta be available, as per the previous 2 years?

Thanks in advance, in anticipation of your reply.

actually that does sound better, having the Tuesday off and finishing on the Sunday.

An arbiter, and a couple of players I talked to seemed jaded playing/arbiting Canberra/Sydney with no real break.

    Cheers
    Garrett.

this might be in the wrong thread
    sorry for that

when will they decide if the SIO will incorporate the australian open?

will it be for this year only or a permanent arrangement?

as a result of the above would the australian championships then be held every year over the christmas new year period?

Sorry for the delayed response Tony - I missed your post!

Yes, the timetable is changed from previous years and will now give the players a short break after the Doeberl Cup.

Yes, the new timetable is fixed.

The new Marriott rates are expected any day now!

The ACF have been dragging the chain with the Australian Open option (still hoping for a miracle!). We may not know what is happening until after 31 December 2008!

The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Parramatta has now allocated rooms for chess players for the period 13-20 April 2009

Twin Deluxe (1 room with a Queen and a Single Bed) is $130.00 per room per night. Breakfast is also available at a discounted rate of $19.95 per person per day for full buffet breakfast.

Please note all unsold rooms will be released on 1 February 2009.

Schools are still on holiday after Easter 2009 and we expect the demand for hotels to be high due to other events in Western Sydney (Royal Sydney Easter Show, Camping and Caravan Show). We are making alternative arrangments for some chess players to stay at other similarly-priced hotels.

The Australian Open is now confirmed at Manly for January 2009.

The organisers of the Doeberl Cup and SIO in April 2009 have now received entries fron Indian GM Abhijit Kunte and Georgian GM Merab Gagunashvili.

Further discussions are taking place with other potential GMs.

We now invite general entries from Australian (and overseas) titled and non-titled players.
