    New Developments at ChessChat.org

    Good Morning Members!

Over the last few weeks the development team here at Chess Chat have been working particularly hard to bring new and unexpected functionality to this forum. Such things as the shoutbox, the arcade, autonews, the quick edit and quick thread functions were added within the last week with many others still in the works. Because of these rapid developments, we've decided we need to ask for a bit more help from you, our loyal members.

Firstly, we need everyone to check that their listed email account is valid and functioning. This short check will ensure that we are able to contact all Chess Kit Network members (Chess Chat Forum is a part of the greater Chess Kit Network, currently under development). For more information, please see this announcement.

Secondly, you may have noticed the addition of a donations button in the forum index. I would like to stress that the Chess Kit Network remains totally and absolutely not for profit. We seek only to provide innovative and useful services to the greater Australian and International chess communities.

However, this goal is becoming increasingly difficult to meet. The financial needs for the network are stacking up, with things such as vBulletin software licensing (US$160 per annum), site hosting and server costs, domain name IP registration (US$150 per annum) as well as incidental expenses. Currently our hosting is covered by the generous sponsorship received from OnSmart Network, though all other costs are borne by Jeo.

After some discussion, Jeo and I have completely dismissed the notion of charging for registration. This, however, does not address the problem of the rising costs incurred in keeping this site active. We have decided that rather than pollute the forum with advertisements we would give you the ability to help us in a very real and highly appreciated way. Anyone who would like to donate to the Chess Kit Network (as little or as much as you like ) can now do so through PayPal by clicking the button and following the instructions on the secure transactions page. We do not expect you to donate, but stress the magnitude of our appreciation to those that choose to.

With our hitcount well in excess of 2 million per month, it is a disturbing possibility that our sponsors may discontinue the funding we rely on. Thus we hope that several small donations can help to alleviate if not eliminate the financial burden that comes with running a large and succesful site. Thank you all very much for your help!

    Yours in Chess,

    Robert

Hi you blokes....how's about a photo slideslow function that I can just insert photos into? It would be much nicer than us posting photos in posts.

It was just a test, I deleted its threads before but I forgot to disable the bot. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Hi Gandalf (and Jeo)

I'm more than happy to contribute $50 towards the running costs of Chesskit/ChessChat. However, I do NOT have a credit card (in fact I've NEVER had one!) and even if I did I would not send my details to you (or anyone else) via the internet. BTW, why are the payment options (when you click on the "donate" button) in $US? Anyway, if you send me an PM with appropriate instructions, I'll be happy to send you a cheque for $50 to Chesskit/ChessChat.

Good luck in trying to get chess players to contribute towards the running costs! One of the big problems in Australian Chess is the stinginess of most chess players (BTW, Shaun Press wrote a very good editorial about this in his now defunct magazine, Australian Chess Forum, about 2 years ago). Indeed, I well remember all those posts endlessly whingeing about a $50 prize for best 2003 BB post until I got sick of it and ended up donating the prize myself!

However, despite Jeo's and others recent initiatives, all does not seem to be well with this forum, in the sense that there have been a LOT less posts over the last 2 months and that this forum has become somewhat dull and boring in recent times.

Now there is a good thought Gandalf. Make it a bit more payment-friendly, mate.

When it comes to payment online, Paypal is about as friendly as anyone can get. If you don't want to use paypal, then just PM me and I'll arrange other methods.

Actually with paypal you don't need a credit card. You can enter your bank details and request to withdraw from your bank into your paypal, and then use your paypal to spend on the internet. They also support Australian banks now.

    Thanks

    hi Jeo
Thanks for listening to the feedback.

Paypal is about as friendly as anyone can get. might be true for you.

Send simpler payment details to my e-mail address then, if you do not want to post here.

We're looking into setting up a bank account for ChessKit that members can deposit directly into, but that entails a lot more red tape than PayPal so it may take a while.
