Lidums Australian Junior Chess Championships 2009

    Hi All,
ACF has just voted to accept the SAJCL/SACA bid to host the Australian Junior early 2009.

The name as per thread title is Lidums Australian Junior Chess Championships 2009.

It will be held between January 2nd and January 13th 2009 at St Ignatius school in Athelstone above the smog line in the Adelaide foothills which is about 20 - 25 mins drive from the city with a bus route within a few metres of the front door.

The venue can comfortably seat 300 at a chess tournament is airconditioned and has a parquetry sprung floor so the noise of feet is soft.

We will have 2 classrooms available for analysis each holding about 40 children.

Tennis courts will be available and the foothills setting gives a surrounding of quiet reflection with lots of room for children to play.

Snacks food etc will be available next to the venue and run hopefully by the school as a fundraiser or we will organise similar facilities.

Alan Goldsmith will be the Chief Organiser and Charles and Roland the Arbiters.

There will only be 1 double round day the rest will be single round days with two rest days.

Full information will be available on the South Australian Junior Chess League Inc website at sajuniorchess.org as soon as is practical.

    Kindest Regards
    frog

Are the entry numbers on the website up to date?

The early bird entry date has been and gone but the website is showing less than 20 entries for the 2 main events??

I think they are reasonably up to date, no more than a week out.

The Australian Juniors are in Adelaide from the 2nd to the 13th of January
The Australian Open and under 1600 tournament, which this thread is about is in Sydney from the 2nd to the 11th of January. The Queenstown Classic is on in Queenstown, New Zealand from the 15th of January onwards.

In the under 10 essentially only Anton is missing. Everybody else who is strong enough to compete is present. Sean Gu (NSW) is a clear favorite with Daniel Lapitan (QLD), Callum Gray (QLD) and Ethan Derwent (ACT) having some chances. Well, Sean has always been the favorite. The only reason Anton got the under 8 title 2 years ago was because Sean did not play.

In the under 8 division I think the clear favorite is Jasper Hong (NSW), who has a NSWJCL rating of 627 (that translates to about 1200 ACF). His main rival will probably be Glen Guxue Qi (ACT).

The biggest shortage of players is in the under 12 section. In fact only the highest rated player Yi Liu (QLD) will be playing, with 5-6 strong kids missing. It is probably would make sense to combine the under 12 section into the under 18, leaving the under 10 separate.
