    Draw accepted.

I had a lot of alternatives at ...19 but while F11 initially claimed five of them (!) to be 0.00, on further analysis some of them advantaged you.

If you wanted to play on there was 20.Ke2 and if ...Qa2 21.Rd2 but even there there is a sea of draws in all kinds of different lines. Actually I must have looked at dozens of different drawn variations on move 19, probably because both kings are so unsafe!

I don't actually know the line I played well and was just trying something different as I am intending to move towards not always playing the Winawer against certain opponents OTB.

I reckon some kind of repetition draw is a very likely result with best play in the 8.Qg4 line if white keeps queens on (and if not it's another French endgame ). There are some previous games like Benjamin-Seirawan 1991 and Nataf-Riazantsev 2006 (won by white and back respectively) but Seirawan's 13...Rg6 is clearly bad as is Nataf's 16.Ne4. It looks like your 14.Ne4 is safer than Nataf's 14.Nge2 but it does give black an easy draw.

NCO thinks 8.f4 is +/= but it only gives 8...Nc6 and 8...cxd4 as alternatives; it does not discuss 8...Qb6 which has been more popular than either since NCO was published and with fairly good results too.

Anyway, thanks for the game, it was short but lively!

I really wanted to play Nge2 because it gets away from the easy draws and gives an interesting games. But no matter how far into the game I was looking, it kept saying advantage to you by a small margin. So I decided, first game, no point going down 0-1 in a four game match just to play a lively game. Had we been much further into the match and so had some idea how the other games were going (likely results), I would have rolled the dice a bit with Nge2.

By the way, this whole game was book up until all the draws started appearing. By the time I realised it was all draw variations, it was too late.

Anyway, thanks for the game, it was short but lively!
Lively if not for the fact it was all book

I would be willing to play from here:

Did you have 14.Ne4 as a book move too in any sense or did you just realise you would have to play it with all the draws that sprang up all over the place in the process?

The auto fritz book and others that I have downloaded over time only gives Ne4 here. In any case, there is only Ne4 and Nge2 to choose from.

That's interesting, because my Fritz11 openings book only includes 14.Nge2 (I had been ignoring it for a few moves anyway.)
