There is no crowding out - they produce shows but they are not to ABC's standard.

Neither left nor right. Doesn't mean that ABC is not left. A mixture of leftist and neutral stories is still leftists.
Ipse dixit. Where is your proof that the stories are only leftist or neutral?

How does 'crowding out' work with television programs? Does Masterchief 'crowd out' My Kitchen Rules?

Good question. I assume it's not to do with the ability to attract talent - with the likes of Karl Stefanovic on 9 earning reportedly some $2m, and the likes of Leigh Sales on little more than a tenth of that at the ABC.

What a silly bint. An employer pays a wage based on an employee's productivity, not the employee's perceived needs. And of course, she lives in California where the government imposes huge taxes and other costs, so housing and petrol are more expensive. It's not the bank manager's job to budget for his employee, but if Democrats want to do something useful, then how about reducing the cost burdens that their policies produce?

The ABC has an unfair advantage in having billions of money coerced from taxpayers. This means less money for them to support other shows that attract money based on popularity with the public rather than support by bureaucrats.

Yet the commercial outlets pay far more, as demonstrated in #1504. If they have the money to pay for better journalists, they should have better stories. Yet the reverse is true. No crowding out in sight.

But commercial broadcasters receive their revenue from commercial advertising. The ABC has no commercial advertising. Therefore commercial broadcasters would not receive any extra money from commercial advertising if the ABC was eliminated.

Yes, commercial broadcasters need to persuade advertisers; the ABC has coerced funding. These taxes mean less money for buying other things, including advertising. The ABC also has an unfair advantage in being able to pay writers and actors more than many private broadcasters can.

In this day and age, with so many ways to see films, movies, TV shows, and listen to music, there is no longer any sound case for a taxpayer-funded broadcaster.

Do you have any actual evidence for the ABC paying more than commercial counterparts? Apart from Leigh Sales v Karl Stefanovic example already given, consider the CEOs.

Hugh Marks of 9 received $4.5m in 2018.
Michelle Guthrie of the ABC about 1/5 of that, $900k.

So you've abandoned the idea that the ABC 'crowds out' other broadcasters? Tax cuts don't automatically translate to extra spending, so you no longer have an argument.

    Evidence for this?

Where do you think that content comes from? I could name a dozen shows that only exist because of the ABC.

Cure for poverty: free market capitalism and free trade

Eradicate Poverty? We Already Know How
    Ed Feulner, 26 Apr 2019

What alleviates poverty isn’t so much government doing something. It’s government getting out of the way.

“Democratic capitalism has done more to pull people out of poverty than any other system in the history of humanity,” best-selling author Arthur Brooks says in a recent video for the Daily Signal.

He recalls the stark pictures found in National Geographic magazine in the early 1970s, illustrating the famine that was killing hundreds of thousands of people in east Africa. Seeing these poor children with distended bellies and flies on their faces was heartbreaking, but the message, Brooks recalls, was that nothing could be done.

“Even as a little kid, I knew the charity wasn’t going to get it done,” says Brooks, the president of the American Enterprise Institute. “It was a hopeless feeling.”

So one would hardly expect conditions to have improved for the world’s poor in the decades since then. And yet, unbeknownst to most people, they have.

Some 70 percent of Americans think that hunger has gotten worse since 1970. But it’s not true: 80 percent of starvational poverty has been eradicated in the last 50 years. Poverty still exists, to be sure, but has been substantially reduced since Brooks saw those searing images in National Geographic.

“Since 1970, the percentage of the world’s population living on the equivalent of less than a dollar a day has fallen by more than 80 percent,” he wrote in a 2012 Washington Post article. “Hundreds of millions of people have been pulled out of grinding deprivation.”

Can we thank U.S. foreign aid, or some well-crafted U.N. development project? Those are the remedies usually touted by pundits and politicians.

    Nope. It was free trade.

As the Rich Get Richer, the Poor Get Richer
Daniel Hannan, Prager University, 8 Apr 20187

The rich are getting richer, and the poor are... also getting richer. What's driving this wealth creation process? In this video, Daniel Hannan explains why it is capitalism — and capitalism alone — that has led to the unprecedented enrichment that is the central fact of Western life.
