The matter is currently being discussed in a court hearing which can be seen here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_-BcBnNeLA although it has just been adjourned for what I think is a short period of time. They seem to be working towards some sort of hearing Sunday.

    Where are we now?

Since no one else has posted the correct state of play, I will update. Post is accurate at time of posting.

Novak Djokovic has sought and obtained an urgent injunction to prevent the government from deporting him following Fridayís decision by Immigration Minister Alex Hawke to cancel his visa.

During a hastily scheduled late-night hearing in the Federal Circuit Court on Friday, Judge Anthony Kelly ordered that the federal government not take any steps to remove Djokovic from Australia before the tennis starís appeal is resolved.

Djokovic also cannot be detained until 8am on Saturday, when he will attend an interview with federal officials.

Following that meeting, Djokovic will be allowed to visit the offices of his lawyers to discuss his case, escorted by two Border Force officials, before being taken into detention.

And he can return to those offices on Sunday, when a final hearing on the matter is expected to take place.

Judge Kelly also said the case would be transferred to the Federal Court of Australia.
The whole article lays out all the possible scenarios from here and if I just copied and pasted them, it would be so long and I have a very strong feeling that all those who have already made up their minds would not care anyways and would just copy what suited them.

The short version of all this is that what I have quoted above and the long form is in the link.

Did our famous government delay their decision deliberately so as to wreck Novak's chance of training and playing tourney games. So either way win and Novak loses.

Says Djoke's lawyer: "this man of good standing who has complied with law, who poses a negligible risk to the community."
Complied with law is a curious way to describe making a false statement on the form that he completed on entry to the country. That false statement is an offence, that can attract up to 12 months in prison. Presumably Djoke's team knows that their silly case is a lost cause and are just hoping it can drag out long enough for him to play the tournament. I hope they lose and have to pay costs.
So what's your excuse? For running like the devil's chasing you?

See you in another life, brotha.

There is a hearing before the Federal Court about to start.

It can be viewed here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQyhi5as4Ko

I will be watching but the chances of me actually understanding what is happening seems to be slim.

Wood for Djokovic was listing the good standing as part of a summary of what Alex Hawke apparently said in his reasons for cancelling the visa.

The hearing dealt with purely procedural matters as expected and the only outstanding matter is whether the case will be heard before a single judge or a full bench of the Federal court. This has an impact on whether an appeal can be made on the decisions made by the court. If it is heard by a single judge then it could be appealled to the full court but if it is heard by the full court then that option is not available.

The hearing tomorrow will start at 9:30am AEDT

Amazing how many resources are wasted on this matter. I imagine some other visa hearings are similar. Hopefully, the appeal will fail. There is slim chance of Novak being investigated properly in Serbia (where his covid test results came from) ....but even those results are very very dubious...

Most likely Desmond in post 1520 is right, it isn't about the appeal but getting a stay or adjournment so he can play in the tournament. This has been tried with success in other sports, though some of those have been court actions against suspensions by the sport itself.

May be put him into detension center in the meantime. Playing tennis is not a legit reason for leaving the center .

Are you arguing that the government should have allowed him to stay? Their inept initial attempt to deport him certainly cost taxpayers a lot of money, as costs were awarded against the government.

I am not sure this is correct. Djokovic's lawyers certainly seem keen to get the matter decided tomorrow and both sides have stated it should be done comfortably. There was a discussion whether to put time limits in for oral submissions but both sides said the matter will be limited and time limits were not required. It might turn out differently tomorrow but I am expecting for it all to be over tomorrow.

I don't know how much it was but I doubt it was "a lot of money" in terms of what the government regularly handles.
