1. ## Random Puzzles

I use the plural since I intend to use this thread for any future puzzles that strike my fancy.

Black to move.
 FEN Viewer

This is from an ICC blitz game between FlyingPiket and JRLOK, played in 2001.

2. 1...Qb3+
2.Kc1 Qxc3+
3.Kd1 Nd4+
4.Be2 Bxe2#

3. Boris-Yep, that is right. Black can play 2.Kd3, but then Ra3 wins.

I found one of my favorite puzzle databases. Most are fairly easy when presented as puzzles, but nice (like the first one in this thread). So I don't know if it is worth people posting their solutions, since often it is just a case of seeing the first move. What do people think of me just posting the puzzle with the solution in white?

Here is a puzzle from that database that is harder than the norm.

Black to move. (Bulah-Petrow, 1951)
 FEN Viewer

4. Black to move. (Bulah-Petrow, 1951)
 FEN Viewer

1... Rxf3 2.gxf3 Bxb3+ 3.axb3 Qc1+ 4. Rxc1 Rd2#

That took me a while, and I'm not sure that I would have found it in a real game without the prompt that I have a win.

BTW, why do we have to mis-spell colour the Yank way?

I suspect that if Black didn't see that 2. Kxb3 resulted in .. Nd4#, this is all academic.

Indeed. I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. Regarding what Black saw, his move before Qb3!! was Ne5-f3!!!, sacrificing a knight on e7.

7. Black to move. (Buczek-Maculewicz, 1993)
 FEN Viewer

Solution in white-->1...Qa3!

8. White to move. (Chiburdanidze-Larsen, 1993)
 FEN Viewer

Solution in white-1.Qxh6+ gxh6 2.Nf7+ Kg8 3.Nxh6# I very much like this mating pattern

Should I keep posting puzzles? (I can't tell if anyone actually reads this thread)

Why not. I'm not an avid reader but I do poke my head in from time to time and like a nice puzzle. You might even inspire me to revive my "white to play and mate in a ridiculously long and contrived way" thread.

Me too. I tried to educate at the pseudo Andy Toh thread a week ago. To no avail. Carry on.
