Senator Ted Cruz's solution is to lock all the door and only have one entrance and exit to the school. All well and good until there is a fire and no one can get out and they burn to death.

So more details are coming forth about what happened.

The shooter barricaded himself inside a classroom at the school by locking the door. Authorities were unable to break down the door so they could not stop the shooter shooting everyone. All of the 19 dead children were in the same class.

The school did have an armed security guard present but he also was unable to stop the shooter.

I am not sure what the door was made of but for the police and boarder patrol officers to not be able to break it down seems very strange.
As is the comment from the police in the article that they seemed happy to have contained the shooter to a classroom, even though it meant he could kill or injure everyone in that classroom.

The police in this case, and too many others, stood by for way too long. We just can't trust them to protect us. So schools instead should have armed officers, and plenty of retired vets would be glad of the work. Any teacher who wants to conceal-carry should be allowed to. Plus: replace "Gun-free zone" signs with signs saying "Anyone who tries to harm our children will be met with armed force."

If he has an idea for getting guns off thugs instead of disarming mainly the law-abiding, I'm all ears. Also, how do we guarantee against tyranny from an armed government against unarmed citizens, which has happened way too often in the last 100 years.

With America's porous borders, we can't keep guns out of the hands of thugs. So the answer is deterring them from shooting. It's no accident they target "Gun-Free Zones" like schools, many churches and theatres, etc. They don't target gun shows or NRA meetings.

Let's stop conflating the average thug/criminal with school/church etc mass shooters. Criminals use firearms to help their money-making criminal endeavours - random shootings would be counter-productive. The disarmament target should be the loner weirdo who snaps and starts killing innocents for no justifiable reason. They should not have access to firearms, particularly rapid-fire assault-rifle knock-offs of the type designed for use by soldiers in wars.
