Thumbs up Enough on Fischer !!

I know there are those chess players inclined to hero
worship who think Mr. Fischer was a great man, but
let's face facts...Despite his talent and success over
the chess board. Bobby Fischer was a hate filled, self
centered, egotistical, paranoid, jerk! Mr. Fischer did
not spare a thought for anyone but himself. There
was little room in Bobby Fischer's world for anyone
but Bobby Fischer. So enough on Fischer folks. Let's
move on. It's clear Bobby Fischer has!

Yeah, and while we're at it, Phar Lap was a nag.

This is a chess BB and given Bobby's sudden death the highlighting of his most memorable games and facets of his chess is both relevant and on topic.

bill718 may not know who/what Phar Lap was.

Whenever any talented but particularly flawed person dies, there is usually a massive outpouring of praise countered by posts like bill718's (or Greg Shahade's) from those who cannot see why the flaws should be whitewashed. And they shouldn't, but Fischer can be cut some slack despite the severe offensiveness of many of his comments on the grounds that he was almost certainly (at least towards the end of his life) severely mentally ill, so much so that he would not even begin to seek help or realise he could do with it.

I'm also not sure how a person who gives away so much of his wealth to his religious cult qualifies as "self centred" - more likely, altruistic out of a sense of obligation, to a degree that turned out to be past the point of folly.

Furthermore, polarised posts expressing harsh (if in many cases justified) views then asking people to "move on" are not very likely to have that effect.

I am very much aware of who Phar Lap was.
I do however, stand by my earlier statement.
Mr. Fischer may have been a chess genius,
but he was still a jerk! I don't like making
negative comments about others, but if the
    shoe fits...

    He certainly was a jerk.

    Pause for effect.

    ...

    ...

Now, back to his most memorable games and celebration of the many positive thing he did for chess ...

Both true. The way you say it sounds backwards to me. Why not say, 'Mr. Fischer may have been a jerk, but he was still a chess genius!' He was, first and foremost a chess genius.

    I don't like making
    negative comments about others,
    Great way to show it.
    but if the
    shoe fits...
The chess genius shoe fits too.

Indeed, so mentally ill that he refused medical help when he was obviously ill, so by the time he was taken to hospital it was too late to save him (source from Iceland).

..Chess is all about fear and psychology

..Chess is like an exam..... you havent studied for

..If you're good at Chess it means you are very intelligent and could potentialy do great things
..... but that you might have wasted that playing way too much chess
