    Scotch

Can someone tell me what white is supposed to play in this position? What's the idea?

There are two schools of thought

    (A) 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Be2 (say, 6.Nb5 also playable) Qxe4 7.Nb5 Bxc3+ 8.bxc3 Kd8 9.o-o

    and

    (B) 5.Nb5 which gives Black more options like 5...Qxe4, 5...Bb4+ and also 5...Bc5 which looks testing for White.

I had a look in the chesslab database and it seems that white wins a very high number of games between higher rated players. Here is one game that black would rather forget. White is GM Kuloats and black was rated over 2400.

Id like to see it complete here if possible.
Look a little more closely at the final position. What should Black play? What will White's response be?

We have a strong new member at our club who does not mind playing the following line in Blitz games. I find this relevant enough to the thread topic.

From here the game can become a real bloodbath after 6...Bxe3 7.fxe3 Qh4+ and Qxe3 or Black can opt for a mild and safer variation with Qd8.

This variation actually exists although it seems a little dodgy for Whte.

I assume you mean 7...Qh4+ (not Qxe3+ which is not legal). Also, 7...Kd8 is interesting. However, 7...Qh4 seems to be the main try for Black.

This line (Blomenfeld Attack) in hasn't seen a lot of action in top flight competition since the 20's but here are a couple of recent games I could find in my database.

But thats a completly different ball game where White plays the solid (perhaps main line) 5.Nb3 and not 5.Be3 followed by the risky 6.Nb5.
Is there any case of Anand playing the Blomenfeld Attack as White of Black?

I didn't find any. The two games I posted are the only recent top-flight games I found. There are some games from the 20's too, Rubenstein-Spielman rings a bell, but I can't be sure at the moment. If you're interested in these I can post them up later.
