Far from any government-forced closures, we've just had nine years of coalition government desperately trying to prop up coal, even mooting new coal-fired power stations at taxpayer expense.
The same government mounted intense pressure on AGL to postpone the scheduled closure of its Liddell plant. AGL didn't blink and the closure began on schedule last April. The replacement mix of renewables, storage and gas peakers will save $23/MWh in generation costs and reduce emissions by 17.6%.
As Desmond points out, it's all about economics. AGL and the other private generators can do the sums.

But China and India find it worthwhile to build more coal plants, and use Australian coal. And Germany takes 'bitter' decision to fire up coal power plants as Russia chokes off its vital natural gas supplies.
I like alternatives to fossil fuels, especially nuclear and hydro. But let's make sure they are constant and intense enough before we get rid of fossil fuels.

Coalition’s $1 billion energy promise fails to power up
A federal policy to spend $1 billion on new energy projects has failed to add any power to the national electricity market more than three years after the Coalition unveiled the plan with a promise to fix supply shortages and ease pressure on prices.
None of the money has been spent on the 12 projects named in March 2019 when then-prime minister Scott Morrison unveiled a program to support six hydropower schemes, five gas projects and one coal-fired power station upgrade. ...

NSW Deputy-Premiers suggestion is in unison with something I have been advocating for a long time - those who get engaged in unlawful protests while on unemployment benefits - should lose the benefits.
All in all, it is rather amazing how many resources are being wasted ...

Blockade a city and open the door to the right: zealots do Dutton a favour
The return of a Coalition government in 2025 is a long shot, whether under Peter Dutton or anyone else. But oppositions have come roaring back to government after a defeat, especially the Coalition.
And if the unlikely happens and the conservatives are back in Canberra in three years, perhaps historians will see the seeds having been sown in the first six weeks of the Albanese government.
The Blockade protests have been an exercise in bloodymindedness. Ironically, most of their commuter victims on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the morning peak are likely to be voters who supported climate-action candidates in North Sydney, Mackellar and Warringah.
The Blockade spokespeople and their champions repeatedly assert that no social change has happened without disruption and some inconvenience to the populace. That assertion might apply in jurisdictions such as the US and South Africa, but much less so in the social laboratory of the Australian federation since 1901. ...
