Hello everyone
Well it seems that these reports keep getting later and later, for which I apologize, but I have been very busy painting the bathroom this weekend, which has not left much time for much else, until now.

Report Under 2000
When we last left this event, there was a sole leader in Richard McCart on 4/4. After his first loss he has been joined by two others; Francisco Chung, who beat Richard ( see Game below) , and Nawzad Elias who after losing in Round 1, has now won four straight, this week winning with the King’s Gambit against Jim Papadinis. Nawzad very quickly landing a knight on e6, defended by a pawn on d5, and almost completely fixed in place. After acquiring two extra pawns going into a simplified position, Nawzad gave both back but won an exchange, and he eventually ended being a whole rook up and had an unstoppable h-pawn when Jim called it a day.. Francisco is undefeated having had two draws so far, and looks to be getting better game by game. Top seed Dean Hogg remains in touch sitting on 3.5, after winning a pawn in the opening against Alex Kaplan ( see Game below), and converting it in the endgame, where he found a few friends to sit beside it at the edge of the board, namely a few more pawns.
The game between John Davenport and Tom Kalisch was a Albin Countergambit declined, which took a fairly unique path straight away, with John managing to win a pawn and the exchange, but his queen got trapped on h8, and he eventually had to exchange it for Tom’s other rook, leaving Tom with a queen and a piece vs two rooks, and it was still a close fought affair, but Tom came up with a checkmating theme on the white kingside which was clever as it involved Tom playing a long king march to help it to happen. Tom’s king was certainly at least as far forward as h5, and had really good hopes of reaching f3 and aiding to checkmate in many lines. The game ended shortly thereafter with Tom victorious.
Rad Chmiel was unfortunately sick and was unable to play this round, and his opponent Nikola was unavailable on the suggested other days to play.
The other forfeit this round was by Damien Arkins against Marcus Ogden. Damien has now withdrawn from this event.
Paul Kovacevic and Adel Ghobrial had an interesting game in some sort of Scotch opening, and it seemed that Paul acquired an extra pawn at some point, though I am not quite sure how. He later launched a successful attack against Adel’s king forcing checkmate or massive material gain.
The game between Jake Kostrzewa and Robert Brooking demonstrated something about how cruel chess can be. After a mix up of move order by Jake at the start, Robert took his chance and won a pawn which was fine. The second proved much harder to swallow. ( see game below ) This was the first game finished barring the forfeits.
So the tournament is still far from decided at the start of Round 6, more details to follow next week.

Klate McFarlane and Peter Theodosiou played a sort of Pirc/ Hippopotamus thing at the start. Klate chose to castle long, as he told me, if I lose pawns on the kingside then that may help my attack. Klate did indeed get the attack he hoped for, and was able to win Peter’s queen and the game soon thereafter.
Judd Niemann and Andrew Louis had a Queen’s gambit type opening, and at some point Judd managed to win a pawn on the queenside, and there was still quite a bit of material on the board, though I think the queen’s were gone. After some heavy piece exchanges down the open b-file, the position remained with still one pawn up for Judd and only a knight each. These too left the board and a position pretty close to this occurred.
Judd then wandered his king to g3 and exchanged the h-pawns, meanwhile Andrew’s king had advanced a fair way too, and seemed to be preventing Judd returning with his king to the centre. But return it did, with some help, and Judd eventually triumphed.
Jusuf Omeragic is a wily player, and he showed this in his game with Sarah Anton. The game was an irregular Sicilian, with Jusuf playing c4, b3 and Bb2 early, and also Ng1-e2-g3 also. He soon advanced f2-f4, and shifted his knight back to e2 from c3, strongly threatening to play d4 with a pretty good looking Maroczy bind. Sarah responded correctly with …e6-e5 and the centre became quite congested. After some to-ing and fro-ing, Jusuf launched an attack on the kingside in Sarah’s ever worsening time trouble, and won an exchange, and after returning the exchange picked up several pawns and then won Sarah’s queen for a rook and a minor piece, which were not able to co-ordinate well enough to stave off Jusuf’s queen and avalanche of pawns. Sarah’s ability to hold on in a position that was deteriorating rapidly whilst having no time speaks well of her fighting qualities, and she is still very well placed in this event, as she has a postponed game yet to play.
Brendan Podbury and Jean-Luc Tambasco played a King’s Indian 4 pawn’s attack which quickly looked like a Benoni as Jean-Luc advanced …c7-c5 and Brendan closed the centre with d4-d5. Brendan held up play on the queenside and then attempted to break through in the centre, and it should have worked; the following position arose.
When after 1….Nxe6, Brendan played 2.Rxe6 and after 2…Qxa5 still fought very hard and came very close in a number of ways to braking through against Jean-Luc’s king even though he was an exchange down. What Brendan missed was that after 1…Nxe6 he could have played 2.Qd5! as pointed out by Bill Jordan, when it seems likely that the resulting position with 2 bishops against Jean-Luc’s rook, after 2…Qxa5 3.Qxe6+ Kh8 4.Qxd7 Qxc3 5.Rd1 was messy but probably better for Brendan who has wonderful chances to launch some sort of attack against Jean Luc’s king
During the week Jean-Luc also managed to play his one postponed game against Klate McFarlane and has clearly moved to the top of the leaders board being now on 5/5. He still must play Peter Theodosiou and Sarah Anton in the next two rounds, so it is by no means decided that the event is his.
