2004 ACT Women's and Girls' Championships

The ACT Junior Chess League & ACT Chess Association
    announce the ...
2004 Women's and Girls' Chess Festival

The second annual Women’s and Girls’ Chess Festival is a two-day rated chess tournament, played with long
time controls and players are expected to record moves. Girls who attended our School Holiday Development Day, our
Girls Allegro, or played in the Girls Primary or Girls High School Championships are encouraged to attend – we think
it will be a lot of fun and a great way to meet other girls who enjoy playing chess! (And you can take a bye or two
if you have to play netball, or soccer, or something else on the weekend!)

Players who have not recorded moves before will be given some instruction and will be able to use “cheat sheets” to
help them remember notation. The long time controls may prove difficult for very inexperienced players (who might
find themselves sitting around for a very long time between games) – the event is most suited to mature and patient
players who a really keen to improve and develop their game. Senior players will be happy to assist with post-game
analysis to ensure all participants will learn some new tricks over the weekend!

    When: 22 & 23 May 2004.

Saturday registration 9.45am, with rounds commencing 10am, on the Saturday and
    9:30 on the Sunday.

Up to two ˝ point byes may be taken. Byes will not be granted for the final round. Because of the time controls
being used, exact start times of the rounds cannot be given. The next round will start 15 min after the previous
round, where the round went considerably over time. Otherwise rounds will be around 2 hours each, with a ˝ hour
break between rounds. As only 6 rounds will be played it is anticipated that finishing time on both Saturday and
    Sunday will be around 5pm.

    Presentation at 5pm on Sunday.

Awards: Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Rating group prizes will be awarded to lower rated participants,
and a range of age prizes will be awarded to unrated participants based on entries received
(ie 1st Under 8, 10, 12 & 14 unrated if sufficient unrated players register). We are really hoping to
encourage our more inexperienced girls to “step up” in this event! Of course, all participants receive
a ribbon – even those over 18 (maybe your Mum will play?)

Where: ACT Junior Chess Centre, Campbell High School, Treloar Crescent, Campbell

Who: Open to all Women and Girls.

Cost: $25 per player ($20 for ACTJCL members). Third and subsequent entries from one family are free.

Time Limits: 1 hour per player plus 10 secs per move at the end. Digital Clocks will be used.

Entries: to Libby Smith on 6291 7625

If you get the SP files to Jeff ASAP after it concludes then it will get included in the June ratings.

    Girls Chess - Aargh!!

We've had a pretty pathetic turnout of 18 women and girls. Women are myself and Jennie Nicholson and we are both on 2 out of 3.

Quite a lot of our aspiring girls are there, but we are missing our good girls such as Miona Ikeda, Gaya Sakthivel, Veronique Eldridge-Smith, Sophie Heath etc. I don't know what you have to do to entice them to play!

Shannon and Tamzin currently lead the tournament and play tomorrow morning. As Shannon has been Tamzin's coach for a number of years, I don't think Tamzin is going into the round feeling too confident.

Lexi Humphrey and Emma Guo are 1/2 point behind having taken 1/2 point byes for sport in the morning. Kayleigh took a loss in round 2 to a weaker opponent, but will be looking to recover tomorrow.

    Jenni,

Are there any impending mid year tests which might have affected the turnout ?

There are end of semester exams in June and the girls always use the incredible weight of assignments as the excuse for not playing, but it is all a bit thin.

It is more the "if Veronique plays I'll play" and we go around in circles with no-one wanting to be the first to say yes.

Then why were there even fewer girls playing in the Autumn Junior weekender and the recent under 16? 7 in the AJW and 8 in the under 16.

I am very disappointed in the turnout, but I suppose to put it into perspective, NSW would need to attract 180 girls to a similar weekender....

Anyway can't stay to argue - have to go and play chess

Because girls find most boys behave obnoxiously when in a group.

Speaking of ratings...do you know (/anyone) if the Mingara May Major is included with the June ratings considering it is held just before June?

    Hi Candy-Cane,

The rule of thumb is results usually have to be in about a month before published ratings ...

... but that can get down to a fortnight or less if the lines of communication between organisers and ratings officers are really good.

    Fingers crossed !!
