    Proposal: Renaming "The 1337 Lounge"

As currently named, "The 1337 Lounge" is a honey pot for all sorts of crap. Is there any particular reason it couldn't be renamed to something that doesn't have the 1337 moniker?

I don't think the name has much to do with it. As an experiment we would try renaming it for a week and see if it makes any difference.

I presume you mean attract to the chesschat site. But it would be interesting if rather it just attracted the posts from the spammers that already were going to post on chesschat. In that case it might be an idea to create a new subforum (is that what it's called?) with an interesting name. I suggest the simple "teh pr0n bannana-lounge."

You'll pay for that, especially the "purple monkey dishwasher" comment.

I'm glad you broke the ice, Barry. It takes quite a bit to slow me up, but that is exactly what Brian managed to do with his hitherto new-to-me offering.

Quality all 'round gents. Dare I say, 'keep it up!'

I thought that it was the forum of choice for inane/spame "first posts" from many new users? I suspected that many of these new accounts are auto-registered by spam bots. If I'm wrong on those counts, feel free to ignore me!

I don't think that will make a difference at all in the short term. The URL will be in Google and other search engines by now, in the following format:

    http://www.chesschat.org/forumdisplay.php?f=61

So renaming "1337" to "IT" or something else will take some time to have an effect. If you want an immediate effect, you could try creating a brand new forum with a new name, move all the threads from OLD to NEW, then delete the empty old forum ... at least then the "f=N" will be a new number which should confuse the search engines enough to protect the board a little more.

Maybe a direct link is in a list of forums to spam somewhere. I thought they might have more sophisticated bots which look for the forum with the least activity or something.

OK I've done this. The new forum id is 77. We'll see if that makes a difference. I'm cynically optimistic.

Feel free to rename this thread too ... just to remove the 1337 bit ... I'm feeling paranoid!

I think it'd be hilarious if spammers posted in this 31337 h4x0r thread.

My linguistic training has enabled me to detect that you are not a real spam-bot. If you were, you would have spelt "Viagra" differently- There are 600,426,974,379,824,381,952 ways to spell Viagra

Even after the rename we are still getting spammers in the renamed forum.

What do you put this down to Bill? Do you think they are "real" people, or bots?

Over at Unwired's board, I took the rather ruthless step of banning every class-A size IP range (1-254.*.*.*) and then re-enabled access for those IP ranges that I identified as "Aussies" or existing legit posters. Would be happy to post the list here if anyone is interested. About once every couple of months I get an enquiry from people who've been knocked back by the filter, upon which I allow them in. On only one occasion has that resulted in a spammer getting through again, and in that situation I then re-blocked a number of class-B size networks from which the spammer originated. Spam at Unwired's board is virtually zero now.
