Interesting incident today during one of the games, I will have mercy and not name the players, but they are strong enough that this kind of thing is quite surprising. White had played a very attacking game but it looked like the attack had run out of steam and Black would have a much better endgame. However White had a check and played it. However he played it thinking it was checkmate and wrote on his scoresheet Rg7#. He did not say anything to his opponent. Black however read what white had written on his scoresheet, did not really look at the board, shook his opponents hand thinking he had blundered into mate. Black then a short while after realised it was not mate but accepted that he had lost. If Black had not accepted he had lost should the game have continued? Would it make a difference if white had written the move down before playing it?

I remember this discussion although there is a difference between the two cases and I am not sure it is significant. In this case apparently (I did not witness it but spoke to various people afterwards) white did not verbally indicate it he thought it was checkmate, he only wrote it on the scoresheet. They both wrote it as checkmate on the scoresheet. I am not sure but think there is a reasonable chance that white wrote the move down before playing it. Although I believe black that he was going on what white had written on his scoresheet it apparently looked like black had resigned for no good reason. Although in general I would agree with you this case seems to make it as hard as possible to allow the game to continue.
