In totalitarian states like USSR used to be - anything was possible. In a particular year (around 1978 or so) Belorussian State championship was won by Ruban. However, as he had a homosexuality-related criminal conviction...it was decided that the title of the state champion should go to the guy who finished 2nd.

Seemingly as people here have pointed out, I have jumped the gun in crowning Bill's win, in that he can technically not win the Championship if he does get disqualified. Highly unlikely, but weirder things have happened in chess before
Hopefully like Banana says, we hope nothing bad happens.

Bill and I talked last night, the last time someone picket fenced the SA Championship. Last known one that Bill could think of was 1983 by Mark Chapman. If anyone however more knowledgeable at SA Chess, knows if that has occurred before then, feel free to reply.
It would save us from looking through lots of previous Championships to see if it has happened before that time![]()

If you are not aware, tomorrow night marks the final night of our long serving Tournament Secretary William "Bill" Anderson-Smith, as arbiter and Tournament Secretary.
Bill has been an absolutely wonderful and dedicated servant to SA Chess and it's been an absolute pleasure working with him all these years.
If you are free, feel free to come tomorrow night and give thanks for all the hard work he has done to SA Chess.

It was nice to see Bill Anderson-Smith for his final arbitrating night. It was also nice to hear a rumour that he will continue to update this thread with tournament results forever and ever.
Nice triple dead heat in the candidates... Paul doing well to score a big upset result to prevent an outright winner.
4 of the 10 players in the State Championship section were playing in their first SA championship and each of them did well to finish among the top 6 positions.
Well done to Bill Jordan for the picket fence score. The last time I saw a picket fence in this competition, I think, was when Bill A-S won the Candidates in that manner about 6 years ago...
