Hi All, The Hobsons Bay Chess Club runs FIDE rated events on Tuesday evenings, starting at 8pm at the Louis Joel Community Centre (5 Sargood St Altona).

Attached are the results for the current round (and I'll post results each week).

Great performance so far by MCC Allegro player Niruruthi who is currently on 2.5/3 in this tournament. Her Top board match with Dean Hogg next round will be the game to watch! Go Niruruthi!

Rory and Mohammad were playing on the board next to me, with a blocked position for most of the game (Q/N/Ps vs Q/B/Ps. Rory kept pushing, but in the end Mohammad got his Q around behind the pawns and so the best that could happen were perpetual checks.

Below are the round 5 results and final standings for the Purdy Cup.

Well done to Tony Davis for taking out the event with a perfect score, and in doing so, has qualified directly for the club championship. I have also updated the Progress scores (the top 8 players qualify for the club championship). My apologises for missing the last 2 rounds of this event, but family matters trumped chess (who would have thought!), so I did not get to post the round 4 results. Also, well done to Rory Wootten for coming equal second - his ACF rating should zoom up a few notches.

Next week will be the first of our Allegro tournaments (5 games of 10 minutes + 10 seconds a move), using the Najdorf Sicilian as our starting position. I did not choose this opening, but I have to admit that I have a long-forgotten pre-algebraic notation book on this opening - all hail to Bobby Fischer! So if you are curious about the club, next Tuesday will be a good time to come along and check us out. This links to the club web site if you need more details about us.

Well 23 eager players turned up for the recent lightning event, and it was pleasing to see that everyone won at least one game. Dean came out on top, followed closely by Nathan and Niruthi. Nathan was looking like the winner until the final round when he was upset by Niruthi.

Please note that the chess club will move back to our usual location from next Tuesday 21 June (the start of our rapid play event). The location is 108 Queen St Altona, the Salvation Army building on the corner of Queen and Bent St. The door is on the Bent St side of the building.

Our reigning club champion (Vishal Bhat) is one of 5 players for Australia who will represent Australia at the*World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad, which will be held in Poprad-Tatry, Slovakia,*from*21-30 July 2016. Best wishes for this tournament Vishal, from everyone at the Hobsons Bay Chess Club. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

The Hobsons Bay Chess Club is commencing its 2018 FIDE rated events from this coming Tuesday (30 January). The first tournament is the Honourable Bob (in honour of our founder Bob Grieves) and is a 5 round swiss. The club has players of all abilities and experience from beginners right up to a number of players rated over 2000 and is a great challenge for all players.

Events are held at 108 Queen St Altona (the Salvation Army Building) with players asked to arrive by 7:20 for a 7:30 start. Entry is only $10 to cover the ACF and FIDE rating costs.

I will post the final standings of each tournament in this thread, along with updates of upcoming tournament.
