Various problems (with White to play and mate in > 3 moves)

(EDIT: I've decided to move this from the puzzles by AO thread so that people would not think that these have the same authorship. I don't know who composed this puzzle but like many mate in > 3 puzzles it is deliciously contrived. I've titled the thread "various problems" as I hope to post more puzzles of this type at the rate one per week or so.)

Have we seen this one before?

Not sure what move you think leads to mate in one. But there are only 4 moves which check and none of these are mate.

    A) 1. Rxg5+ Bxg5
    B) 1. Rg6+ fxg6 (now 2.f6+ is not mate because of 2...Kf7)
    C) 1. Rxf7+ Kxf7 (or 1...Bxf7)
    D) 1. Bf8+ Kxf6

Perhaps you could qualify your question with a variation.

    Puzzle #1 - Solution

The interesting thing about this puzzle is computers have a hard time finding the solution in normal analysis mode. Solve for mate mode works ok but in normal playing mode it appears as if White's move 3 is just too bizarre to be considered, even though all of Black's moves are forced!

Stay tuned for puzzle #2 in a couple of days.

    Puzzle #2 - Solution

The interesting thing about this puzzle is that the white rook can move to just about anywhere along the 6th rank and threaten mate with moving to the fifth rank on the next move. However most files have many ways to prevent the mate and some of those release some of black's pieces and spoil the mate. The one way to prevent this is to play Rg6 which forces Rg4 and then Rf6 can no longer be answered with Bh3 and so Rf4 is force and so on almost until mate.

    Puzzle #3 - Solution

This is quite a convoluted solution lacking a little the whimsy of the previous two but a good puzzle nonetheless. I'll tyry to add some comments as to why the threats and why blacks responses are necessary but I may miss quite a lot. Here is the solution.

    PGN Viewer

Note that the solution is unique as b4 is necessary to remove the threat of Rxc3 which can destroy some mating threats later and also the Rook on a3 also prevent Na3 which is the answer to c4 being played too early. As noted earlier e5 is only playable after the c6 pawn is blocked and e5 is necessary because if it is omitted then after h3 black has the resource Qf8. The move e5 forces Nf6 and therefore blocks the f-file and prevents the Qf8 resource to defend the f3 square.

    Puzzle #4 - Solution

This solution is reminiscent of puzzle #2 with the queen shuffling up the board abd the rook matching. However this time they are moving perpendicular instead of in parallel. So the keey is that if the rook gets back to the last rank then it will take eight moves to checkmate and wee need to do it in seven. So the queen keep threatennig to invade the last rank and the rook keeps blocking by sacrificing itself. Until the queen threatens on two squares and the show is over.

Is it possible to just have one thread for moremover's problem (which isn't his in the first place) instead of trying to hijack threads? I see 3 threads with the same thing: solution and advertising his YouTube channel.

Agreed; I am cleaning up the duplicates and off-topic examples and deleting or editing them. In particular, off-topic chess posts in the non-chess section are being deleted or edited.

Incidentally who is the author of the problem?

I will move discussion of this to the moderation discussion thread once confident it has been seen.

I don't know who it is, but apparently he is notorious for passing other peoples work off as his own.
