    Australian Chess Columns

I have been meaning to post something like this. Personally, I don't mind the occassional 'political' or overly 'newsy' flavour in Rogers' column. But I much prefer games even only briefly annotated by him. And not just Rogers' column but I am talking about chess columns in general.

    What do you all think?

News papers should print news. Do you get the incrasies of other games - cricket, races, equestian - being described? No. The sports pages are 95% sports politics and gossip. The internet supplies a virtual infinity of anotated chess games for those online, and for those who aren't but know one of the former. Wasting the precious little print space chess has on anotated games, is a crime.

Annotated games probably serve some purpose in helping people who are only mildly familiar with the game to get interested in it - just plain news will never do that. Apart from that, though, print is such a clumsy format for playing through games when it's so much easier to rip them off the net and load them into something. As for annotations, a slight problem for any serious player with even weekly columns (as well as quick internet notes) is the deadline issue; the first annotations - even by the best annotators - often turn out to have a few mistakes or oversimplifications in them anyway.

    The poll is now closed!

However, if I could vote, I would vote NO! More news and LESS annotation of games seems the correct way to go!

for once and for ages an interesting game has finally showed up in a chess column (admittedly I only go through them rarely after some disappointments). In Peter Parrs column in this Monday's Sydney Morning Herald his first game is a classic or at least is heading that way before being rudely interrupted and so has not seen how it has ended. check it out two gm are really going at each other seemingly ignoring what the other is doing

Does the Melbourne Age still have a printed chess column? I know Chris Depasquale used to write a great one at one time, but is it still going in some form?

Yes, the chess column is on the 4th last page of the A2 on Saturdays, underneath the crosswords at the bottom of the page.

Does anyone know how many actual printed weekly newspaper chess columns there currently are in Australia, and who the columnists are?
