This was a 5 min ICC game, so may not count in this thread, but a very funny swindle by my son, who was playing Black and being thrashed

We'll take anything on this thread.

This is the commonest form of swindle: victim totally overlooks opponent's threats when the slightest caution results in an easily won game. Especially funny because white had four moves to smell the coffee and refute the mate. However, was white critically short of time?

White had 35 secs left / Black had nearly 2 mins - but 35 secs is not really critical in a 5 min game situation in that overwhelming position. Unfortunately, unlike my son - or others in this thread - I seem to be perpetually the victim rather than the perpetrator of swindles

Bonham - Rezaie, Lton Weekender 2009.

I was feeling like an ungracious goose being deservedly punished for disdainfully rejecting a reasonable draw offer in this game as I sat there in an increasingly lost position. However my opponent (not for the first time in recent history) succumbed to one of the commonest swindle forms: getting mated while trying to avoid perpetual check.

Very unlucky and undeserved for the opponent, but these things cancel out as this is the same opponent who I lost to when my flag fell as I was delivering mate in KQ vs KR in 2005.

I was an ambitious 14 year old just having advanced from third category
to play my first tournament in second category. I knew I was in for some
trouble, so my 3˝/7 was not a bad debute, but it would even have been
4˝ if I had taken a bit more care in the last round, Norgaard-Dittman Denmark 1977:

Perhaps I can quote Magnus Carlsen when he lost to Kasparov at the
tender age of 13 years, without a trace of irony: "I played like a child".
    Well so did I.

    Swindle? Blunder?

I do not really know if this can be classified as my greatest ever swindle or Slobo's worst ever blunder, but, anyway, here it is:

    Event: 2008 CV INTERCLUB
    Venue: Box Hill Chess Club
    Date: 2008.08.16
    White RENZIES, ELLIOTT
    Black RADOVANOVIC, SLOBODAN
    Result 1-0

    1-0
I really felt sorry (almost guilty) after this but then I remembered all the presents I have given to opponents through two centuries of Chess and calmed down! Slobodan, on the other hand, being the gentleman he is, took all this with a laugh and joked about it!

It's a blunder (OK, you were working to draw the error with a5 and axb6, but anything else except taking back with the a-pawn still wins easily), but specifically it looks like a self-swindle.

I'm guessing he knew full well that your queen would take back but thought he would back-rank mate you. He just failed to realise it would be check when your queen took back, so he would get mated not you!

3... Qe7 is dreadful. No need to chase it right away with Nd5 since it's badly placed where it is. Leave that in reserve and play d4, Bg5 and threaten Nd5.

12... Nxc2 would have rebounded if White had played 13. Bxf6 (threatening to corner the R with Bxg7) 13... gxf6 14. Nd5 threatening both the fork on f6 and taking the Nc2.

I think there needs to be a minimum time control criteria of at least a 30 minute game for this thread.
