Do we diminish the value of our tournaments by having 5 states all running a tournament on the one weekend...
Are 4 tournaments better than one big one?

The problem is that long weekends are a scarce commodity. In Tas we have especially silly problems because we have different public holidays in the north and south, plus some of the holidays fall midweek, so there are really only two usable long weekends per year - Labor Day and Queens Birthday. Also we need long weekends for our Champs and Open because the chess population in Tas is very dispersed for a small state. So we, at least, can't realistically avoid these clashes.

I think clashes are unavoidable, but from a SA perspective it this year SACA dropped the Adelaide Cup weekender because the Adelaide Cup holiday was moved so the horse race would have better weather and it clashed with the Ballarat Begonia weekender.
