2006 ACT Adults vs Juniors (also known as The adults strike back)

The second annual Adults v Juniors match took place at Belconnen last Friday and revealed an intersting new dynamic. Until recently adults have been assumed to hate playing juniors because of their encyclopedic knowledge of opening theory in general, their proficiency in the St Vitus Gambit in particular, and the lack of anything to gain - lose, as you probably will, and you never hear the end of it; if you win people are unimpressed, and if anyone mentions it all it is to just to point out what a strain you had beating a little kid.

The first two factors may be unchanged but for the last the boot is on the other foot. Now juniors are just expected to win after memorising the Sicilian Dragon to move 38 and their parents having mortgaged the house and several vital organs to employ coaches. They are the ones with nothing to gain and in consequence of their avoidance of potential humiliation the Juniors could not even muster as players as the Adults, who they normally outnumber by about three to one at BCC.

The other problem that the Juniors have is that their players, like pieces in transfer, keep turning into the opposition. Last year they lost Jeremy Reading and Shannon Oliver to the Adults, this year it was Tor Lattimore and Simon Mitchell. So depleted were they that Jenni Oliver had to play as an honorary Junior.

It was expected that the Adults would do well in the middle boards, where they had several hundred points up on most boards, but the Juniors would at least hold their own on the top boards, with their team featuring the two highest-ranked players, and on the lower boards where their greater depth would cut in.

The first part came true and the Juniors were probably satisfied holding the Adults to only 5½-3½ on the middle row, including wins by Edward Xing and Taiyang Zhang against much higher-rated opponents. However disaster struck on the top row where Junta Ikeda was the Juniors' only winner and top gun Michael Wei went down to Tor Lattimore, the Adults taking the row 4½-1½. The expected revival on the bottom boards also failed to materialise, with the Adults actually coming out on top 5-3. Hence the Adults were victorious all through the order, taking the match by a hefty 15-8.

The table of this and other events can be seen at

In the list below the Adult player is listed first and the result relates to the players, not the colour. Adults were White on odd-numbered boards.

There is no play at Belconnen this coming Friday, when the Doeberl Cup is on.

I rather enjoyed being a junior again - it was an enjoyable game as well. Richard is a Mexican who has just moved to the ACT, but doesn't seem to have played rated games before. He was an OK player though.
