I will be in Brisbane from the 2nd to the 6th of January, hopefully playing in the lightning on the 6th, although it might prove to be impossible.

    I agree with Garvin.

    1. Most people on chesschat you wouldn't know (like me).

    2. And there are many people who have chesschat accounts who like to keep their identities private.

    3. It seems a bit... strange that you'd just invite anyone to a restaurant for lunch.

    1. Of those that post here regularly, I know quite a lot of them; many in person, and others who I talk to regularly online.

    2. What's that got to do with anything?

    3. Forgive me for being 'strange', I was trying to be hospitable. About 15 of us met up in Canberra earlier this year for dinner and it was a very enjoyable experience, that would be nice to replicate.

But, if that's your anti-social attitude RuyLopez, I probably wouldn't want to meet you anyway.

Interesting this issue of being resistant to meeting online people in person. Reminds me of people I’ve heard of who carry on lengthy online romances with people they’ve never met (and possibly hope never to meet!! )

That’s an extreme example… of course it’s fine to prefer to just visit chesschat and not meet up with the people on it.

Nevertheless, I tend to think it’s the opposite of strange to make arrangements to meet online mates and acquaintances face to face … especially when you’re all going to be at the same chess tournament.

    It’s just being friendly, normal.

I've done "meet the Internet folks" events a few times over the years. It can seem a bit odd at first, but then you realise that the people that you have met "mind to mind" as it were are still the same people face-to-face ... although almost never have I been able to correctly guess what the person would look like based on their 'Net persona.

Hi...I'm Fireeaters wife...and and am going as a escort and 'Mum' for the length of the tournament to 3 boys - I've not met 2 of them...and 1 only briefly.

Would also like to meet up for whatever may be planned..or maybe other people in my situation - ie loose end for periods of the day.

    Hi Cas

There should be a lot of us up there - I have already made tentative "coffee" dates with a number of other Mums. (I promise you they are not boring!)

I suspect you will find people quite friendly.

I will arrive on 5/1, about noon. Then come back to SYD on Sunday, 8/1. Just thought I'd take a weekend break from work.
