Its hard not to have fun- firstly, its chess Secondly, I was with school friends and it was so well organised and friendly, I dont see how you couldnt have enjoyed it.

And as you said, "if it's no longer fun, walk away" why would someone play for years and not enjoy it? (when saying that, I mean many of the players there I believe have played for years from their strength). Better to be bad at something and enjoy it than be great at something and hate it the rest of your life, just because you win comps at it.
