Melbourne Chess Club Fitzroy Open 2005

    Hello Everyone,

We are fast approaching the end of the Melbourne Chess Club Open, with only one more round to go. After that we have a week off for the Melbourne Cup weekend ( when there is some tournament in Elwood I believe…hmmm should consider playing!!!).

After that the next event to be run at Melbourne is the Fitzroy Open. This is an event akin to the Dandenong Grades, or Box Hill Rainbow Championships, with the players playing within a pool of 8 like rated players, who play a round robin event.

Each division has a separate set of prizes and they are equal in all divisions (obviously!!) .The advantage of these types of events is the avoidance of the swiss nightmare ( winning in alternate rounds) owing to vastly different strength of opponents. Here a player can feel competitive in each round that they play, and hope to place in their group.

Although not expressly decided on at this point, I would imagine the first prize in all groups would be at least $80, or basically double the entry fee.

The event is open to non members, and we would welcome any enquiries that people had about the event to be; a) posted here, and I will attempt to answer them; b) PM me and I will perhaps be able to provide more specific information, or to register your entry with me; c) call the Melbourne Chess Club on (03) 9416 3149 and speak to president Greg Gatto, or one of the other duty officers; or finally d) call vice president Malcolm Pyke on 0408 150196, or email him at dexter@labyrinth.net.au

Below are the details of this event, specifying time of play, address of venue, time controls and entry fees.

I think it is designed only for people who live in Melbourne.
Why not have more weekenders (in the Grand Prix of course) so that players from the Country or interstate can play also.

Some years ago I used to travel to Melbourne and play in weekenders two or three times a year! Think Australian not Victorian!
