    Well done to Will and Scott on the joint win.

    Not one of my better nights - after winning my first two games convincingly I then blundered a piece or more in my next five in a row!

    round 3 vs Josh: in a perhaps worse position "won" a knight by taking it with a rook while the pawn defending it was pinned to another rook. However because of a back rank issue I then couldn't stop the pawn promoting and had to give it back.

    round 4 vs Mark: decided to win a pawn with a combo in the opening, but after playing the opening move discovered that he had an obvious but unexpected reply which put me a piece down. Only won because of a touchmove counter-blunder

    round 5 vs Toby: blundered against London System for the third game in a row against Toby (I did win one of them though) this time by simply unprotecting the bishop on d6 while making a non-threat against b2.

    round 6 vs Owen: in a winnable ending allowed a rook check deflecting my rook away from preventing his pawn from promoting. Lucky to escape with a stalemate.

    round 7 vs Andrew: more opening blunders that cost me exchange and a pawn.

    I blame the election.

    2019 HOBART CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

    Nine-round Swiss for adults and juniors. Players must record all moves. 60 mins + 30 secs/move.
    Game Start Time: Please be present at 6:30 pm. We will start as soon after 6:30 as we can each week.

    Scheduled Playing Nights:
    (Subject to change which may be at short notice - see “Online Notices”)
    Week 1: May 6, Week 2: May 13, Week 3: May 20.
    (May 27 Postponement week)
    Week 4: June 3 (Club Closed June 10) Week 5: June 17.
    Week 6: June 24
    (July 1 Postponement weeks)
    (July 8-22 School holidays and student free day (postponement weeks for adults)
    Week 7: July 29, Week 8: August 5
    (August 12: Postponement week)
    Week 9: August 19
    (August 26, Sep 2, Sep 9: Postponement weeks until finished)

    Any scheduled night may be changed to a postponements week or vice versa as needed, especially near the end. One-night quick-rated tournaments will frequently be held during postponement weeks for players who do not have postponed games – subject to someone being available to run them.

    Postponements:
    No half-point byes. If you cannot play on a given night you can postpone your game. Maximum of three postponements per player, plus one free postponement of a game that your opponent has postponed. For pairing purposes only, a result of postponed games will be assumed as needed based on rating. Please don’t postpone lots of games early in the event unless you really need to.

    Unable to play: If you cannot play your game, you (or your parent) MUST tell Kevin, strictly by 5:30 pm on that night if emailing (k_bonham@tassie.net.au) or strictly by 6:30 pm on the day if calling or texting (0421428775). Please notify absences before the day if you can, so they can be posted online.

    Late arrival: You also need to notify Kevin if you will be more than 15 minutes late (ie arriving after 6:45), either in one case or in general. It may be possible to delay the start of your game(s). Otherwise your clock will be started at 6:45, and if you are not present by 7:15 you will lose on forfeit. Players who are absent without notice will be removed from the tournament until we have heard from them again. Players absent without notice repeatedly will be excluded.
    Late entries: Players can enter late up til June 3, but must enter by 6:30 on the night to play in that night's round. Late entries will start on zero unless decided otherwise.
    Provisional Draw: For all rounds after week 1 a provisional draw will be posted on Chess Chat. This draw may be changed, eg because of late entries. In rounds 2-4, if shown as having the bye, you still have to turn up briefly in case someone joins in who can play you.

    Online Notices:
    All news re postponements, schedules, results etc will be posted on the Chess Chat forum forum (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread....s-results-misc and click on "Last" on right-hand side of screen).

    Swan - Bonham I had a maximum of 2 hrs 40 mins to play this game in and as a result rushed a bit at the start, blundering a pawn on move 6. However I recovered it on move 21 and then had an increasingly better position.

    This post made me a bit confused as you played black but titled it Bonham- Swan. After going through the game I thought that you had lost but still had a perfect point score??
    Zionism is racism as defined by the UN, Israel by every dirty means available steals land and water, kill Palestinian freedom fighters and civilians, and operates an apartheid system to drive more Palestinians off their land

    It's common for me to stuff up stuff like that. As the pairings show I was black.

    Was it worth trying to take advantage of Black's reserved play with d4 on move 6 or 7?

    Going into OCB on move 19 was very strong, not just because of the P win, but because the White B was so much better positioned than its counterpart. The Black K-side light squares were very weak, especially after 27... g5, that Black could have plausibly chosen to die on the K-side instead of the Q-side. The Black B had no where to go because of White's Pe3 and the lack of supported dark squares.

    Yes, after winning the P and playing sensible moves for a long time, he went to pieces rather quickly. I thought that some of his moves after winning the P, e.g. 16. g4, were indifferent compared to completing development, but they were OK according to Stockfish. This engine gives White about +2 in your note 20.

    Actually we discussed the position after move 6 a long time ago. But the strong engines have suggested alternatives that I had never thought of.

    Just received a phone call from the school asking that next Monday the 27th May we use the upstairs hall rather than the drama room.

    As there is a function booked for that date in the Drama room.

    Not sure where "I did eleven media interviews about the failure of Australian polling today and I am exhausted" rates on the Chicken Factor checklist for taking this quick-ish draw!

    Maybe we should re-schedule the Bonham Cup (Tasmanian Rapid Championship, won from 2014-2017 by Kevin) to "whenever there's an election" ... to even the contest.

    Postponed games next week:
    3 = Powell-Davies,Thomas ( 1.0) - Liu,Yang ( 1.0) = 9 - 4 = postponed
    11 = Nguyen,Le ( 0.0) - Blackburn,Roger ( 0.0) = 23 - 11 = postponed

    Rapid-rated allegro or blitz of some kind for players not playing postponed games.

    3 = Powell-Davies,Thomas ( 1.0) - Liu,Yang ( 1.0) = 9 - 4 = 0-1
    11 = Nguyen,Le ( 0.0) - Blackburn,Roger ( 0.0) = 23 - 11 = 0-1

    I forgot to schedule Tan vs Floyd which could have been scheduled for this week if I remembered it. That game plus Roger vs Thanh are currently scheduled for the school holidays in July but will be moved forwards if there is a need to have an earlier postponement week (which is quite likely.)

    Allegro in progress.
