Great fun tonight. David took white on all boards and played a variety of first moves (I saw e4, d4, Nc3, Nf3, and I think f4). 25 players played in the simul against David; impressively all were still going after about 20 moves. Some players had good chances - I was better at a couple of points, and Kam Lee was a bishop up but got swindled. Les Hay also played a good game and was according to David slightly better. The last game going was David vs Peter Wagg and Peter won a piece in the endgame and offered a draw which was accepted.

Here's my game - I was better but I did not find the right plan, and then David gave me another chance which I missed.

A tough game. Excellent simul skills by GM Smerdon against respectable club opposition that didn't make it easy for him. Sounds like an enjoyable night for all.

Something else I add is that David was really fast! Despite no games finishing before move 20 the whole simul took just under two and a half hours. Each player was allowed two passes.

Huge turnout for the start of the Open Rapid tonight! Only two upsets against rating; one would be, er, me. I got swamped in a rook and OCB ending where I thought I could be better; it got so bad that Kam blundered the exchange and still won.

OTB I didn’t castle because I thought Bh3 was a threat but the computer tells me Bh3 is a blunder because of the reply f4
