The king of upsets at fast time controls strikes again! When I saw the game Milutin was exchange down but Jerome's king was on a bad square and the position was very dangerous. Jerome could have swapped queens for the cost of a pawn but I think didn't, and got mated.

Earlier I swapped rooks into a pure pawn ending that I thought was a win but wasn't; the rook ending was pretty drawish anyway. And Ian won a seemingly drawn OCB against Will, which finished up on move 93 after Ian converted with queen vs knight's pawn on the seventh.

At the AGM Ian Little stood down as President after five years but will continue on the Exec as Vice-President and Webmaster. Chris Shepherd is our new President.

Motions passed at the AGM included making the last Monday of every month (starting April) a rated one-night fast event (blitz or allegro) and also that we will start a Coaching Club for adult beginners or inexperienced players at the same time as the Junior Club subject to arranging an appropriate coach.

Sorry I could not be there for the AGM. A combination of familial commitment and a lack of forward planning conspired against me. Glad to see the idea of blitz/allegro competition on a regular basis. It will be important to get some of the juniors into this. D

    Special event Easter Monday! (TBC)

Hold those holiday plans, we are hoping to have a guest lecture from a very special visitor on Easter Monday April 2 and for this reason we may either open the club or else arrange another venue for that night.

More information to follow in coming days.

Sorry for getting people's hopes up! Our intended guest hasn't been able to come down at this time after all but hopes to make it down later this year.

A bit of chaos with the pairings in the first round tonight because of people being AWOL or suspected of being AWOL then turning up! Apologies to Ian who was paired to play Adam and ended up playing Toby and Jerome (and being swindled by Toby too.)

Reminder: Lightning Champs April 9. 7 pm sharp start. 3/2. 9 rounds depending on entries.

Very good winning score in quite a strong tournament.

Ta. My TPR comes out at 2182 but Tasmanian quick ratings are a bit inflated; also, another instance of the result of a tournament being decided by which of the stronger players could play all rounds and which could not. (Swings and roundabouts as last year I missed out on a possible =1st in one this way.)

In an embarrassment for the great city of Hobart our club blitz title has been not just plundered but picket-fenced as well by a raider from north of the Cascade-Boags line! (He is a club member and quite often travels down to play in our events, which shows a lot of dedication to chess.) Congrats to Aidan who was not in serious trouble on the board in any of his games (though he was briefly a pawn down against me) though he did say he was under a lot of time pressure in several.

Good to get several juniors playing and scoring pretty well. (Will nearly got another point as I went within 1 second of flagging against him.)

Next week: Bullet Champs 1 minute plus 1 second per move, also starting 7 pm. Not rated.

Jerome won the Bullet Champs 12/12, I got 10, and Ian, Tan and Will were on 8. Will post cross table later. Alastair Maria made an impression by winning his first five in a row.

Next week will probably be an allegro, to be decided on the night by those present.
