Yes we are restarting on Jan 14th (assume 15th a typo?). I have checked with Alex (who has the key) and we'll both be there 6:30 tomorrow evening.

Club is closed next week for Australia Day public holiday.

There will probably be an allegro on Feb 4 - time control TBD on the night.

Club will probably be open Regatta Day Feb 11 at this stage.

My bid for 6/6 was spoiled by Will constantly sacrificing pieces and ended in a perpetual with me a meaningless rook up. There was one Tal-style move I was particularly impressed by that cost me far too much time on the clock.

    Coming calendar:

Feb 11 - Regatta Day public holiday, club will be open, probably another unrated quick tournament but TBD on the night

    Feb 18 - Rated allegro

Feb 25 - Hobart Blitz Championships

March 4 - Annual General Meeting 6:30 pm (may be followed by casual games, mini-tournament etc depending on how long it takes)

March 11 - Club Closed - Public Holiday

David Rolph is pictured in this article in The Mercury dealing with the recent Tasmanian fires:

    https://www.themercury.com.au/news/t...b1edb87602a42e

Article probably paywalled for non-subscribers; the caption reads:

"David Rolph, of Deep End Farms, is feeling relieved after recent rain. The horizon behind him was well alight during the peak fire days."

Yang pulled off a rather hair-raising win against Peter where he was playing on about 5 seconds fishing for a perpetual for a long time and eventually managed to pick up a queen instead. His win against me was better; I lost the plot in some minor tactics in the late middlegame and finished up with a bad pawn that cost me the game.

The school have again asked us to use rooms SB21 & SB22 for the next two weeks (tonight and next week). For those that remember it's the same classrooms we used back in September when Kevin wrote - "Tonight and next week we're in rooms SB21, SB22 and SB23 of the Secondary building on the top floor (I'm not sure quite where this is yet but we will make sure there are directions.) Also parking will be difficult because of drama productions."

Not drama productions this time but rather 'learning conferences' but I guess the comment about parking still stands.

I won against Peter after an error allowing me a probably winning pin in an otherwise messy middlegame. Chris and Milutin both played very solidly against me and I don't think I had anything much against either of them.

This is the final position of Bonham - Ivkovic

Milutin has just played ...Be8 and then offered a draw. With about 1.5 minutes vs five and thinking I was probably about to drop a pawn I accepted, missing Rf8! (found by Chris) after which black has to find ...Bd7 to hold (everything else loses)

In my game against Will I vagued out and flagged in the middlegame (which I am very prone to do at 3/2) though it appears I was losing a pawn in any case. I swindled at least three other opponents so that, plus the fact that Will only lost to Priyanjith with the event in the bag, means the margin of half a point flatters me.

We had our first case tonight of someone making an "illegal move" under the new rules by pressing the clock before moving. The player doing so had KR vs K at the time so was still able to win.

I started compiling a list of past Lightning/Blitz champions, then discovered I'd done this before several years ago, so I've now edited the full list into post 1. I can't find any records of the old Hobart International club before the 2002 HICC/SBCC merger having held a Lightning Champs, though I think it probably did.

GM David Smerdon 24.5-0.5 Hobart Chess Club

Great fun tonight. David took white on all boards and played a variety of first moves (I saw e4, d4, Nc3, Nf3, and I think f4). 25 players played in the simul against David; impressively all were still going after about 20 moves. Some players had good chances - I was better at a couple of points, and Kam Lee was a bishop up but got swindled. Les Hay also played a good game and was according to David slightly better. The last game going was David vs Peter Wagg and Peter won a piece in the endgame and offered a draw which was accepted.

Here's my game - I was better but I did not find the right plan, and then David gave me another chance which I missed.

    Open Rapid starts next week

The Open Rapid will be cut back to 6 games this year, to be played over the next 3 weeks, 2 games/night of 15 mins plus 2 secs/move from move 40. This is so we can start the Club Champs in early May after the school holidays. During the holidays I expect there will be some one-night allegros.

For the Open Rapid any player who is in the tournament but can't make a given week needs to let me know in advance (ph 0421428775). Any player can take up to two half-point byes with advance notice.
