Some long games tonight - Kruup - Cohen was about 96 moves and Martini - Ocoleanu was about 111, the latter finishing in a Q+2P vs Q+P ending that was about as incomprehensible as they usually are.

    Bonham - Lee

My game with Gary last night. I was happy with the way the opening and early middle game went. But failed to convert. Maybe time management an issue, I think we were both down to just a couple of minutes by move 25. Which meant we both missed tactics in a still complex position. My drive to exchange martial went too far ending up with only opposite coloured bishops.

The OCB ending is still winning for white after 47.Bf5 but very tricky for white to convert while more or less down to the increment. Once white has only one passed pawn left it's a draw. Often when there are two passed pawns close together the defender can blockade them successfully but not in this case.

With OCBs, if you are trying to win, then leave at least a pair of Rs on. The R+B combination can be good in the attack, because the opposing B can't defend the same squares, and R is much better on attack than defence. And in the middlegame, White should not have exchanged very powerfully placed pieces for passive ones.

    18. Bxb6 lost some of lot of the advantage, although it should still have been winning. White has an extra P, dominating position, and Black's Q-side Ps are very weak, thanks to that Q raid on b7. 18.f3 was fine, keeping the B pair, and Black's Ns are in the very precarious position of defending each other, added to the previously stated problems. Best was the direct 18.exf5 gxf5 19.Be6, pinning one of those precariously placed Ns as well as forking it and the Pf5. Black can't avoid even more material dropping, with no relief of the position to compensate.
“The history of the 20th century is full of examples of countries that set out to redistribute wealth and ended up redistributing poverty.”
“There’s no point blaming the tragedies of socialism on the flaws or corruption of particular leaders. Any system which allows some people to exercise unbridled power over others is an open invitation to abuse, whether that system is called slavery or socialism or something else.”—Thomas Sowell

Straton - Bonham. A tough game and I was briefly losing for two moves in the endgame but by this time we were both quite short of time (me more so).
