    NSWCA U1600 2nd place

Thanks to Rod Plant for this report. (Rod is ex Western Suburbs and now our valuable property)

    Sydney Grade Match Competition 2005

Once again, Wollongong entered two teams in the Sydney Grade Match Competition.

    Under 2000
We won the <1800 last year, and moved up a division to the <2000 this year. That proved a tough ask. The good news is we finished third, just; the bad news is that it was out of four. The bright spark was our 2005 Club Champion, Mustafa Erkan, who won an individual Board prize with 6 from 8 on Board 1. Bad news: Mus is moving to Sydney for work.

    Under 1600
We gave this competition a real shake. A 4-0 first round win put the others on notice, and we never slipped lower than second. We were up against a St. George side with 5 players rated 1550 or better, and they set the pace. We held them 2-2, partly thanks to our celebrity pinch hitter Vaness Reid drawing on Board 1.

Week after week we were drawn against the team lying third and challenging our hold on second, and each one we beat convincingly.

However, St. George kept on winning well, and had a 4-point lead on us with three rounds to go. Finally able to field a stable team, we kept the pressure on with a series of 3-1 wins. They stumbled in the second-last round, giving us a chance of winning, but they steadied and finished 2.5 points ahead of us.

Michal Tokarz with 8/10 and Rod Plant with 7/10 both won individual Board prizes; Brendan Serelak with 6/7 just missed (he needed to play one more game, meaning one less night of soccer umpiring!); Rade Mijakovski took on the toughest field on Board One and finished with 50%, 3.5/8; and Matthew Sweeney played well above his rating for 3/7.

Thanks to John Mazzieri and Matthew Sweeney for looking after the equipment and driving (Matt did this every round, even when he was not playing), and to Chris Tokarz, our number one spectator and photographer.

Congratulation to Mustafa, however he is not 2005 Club Champion. That tournament is currently underway and Mus (due to work commitments) is not playing.

Wollongong played well and kept the pressure on...

    Well played Wollongong....

As captain of St George U1600 and the fact I live 2 minutes away from the Club... I managed to see quite a few Wollongong matches... They kept the pressure on us all season... despite having to travel every week... and Rod also brought some of the Wests-St George rivalry with him to Wollongong this year....

We were quite fortunate to play with all 5 players over 1590 (June ratings) whereas 4 players fell below the U1600 cut-off in March.

Looking forward to continuing the rivalry
